ABOUT THIS BOOK
Description
Daddy asked, looking at Kamilat as she returned to the dining room.
She sat down and said,
“I found him sleeping, but he’s awake now.”
Mommy hissed softly and said,
“This behavior of his is becoming too much. And now he has a stubborn heart too; he refuses to wake up. May Allah help us. Honestly, my fear is that Afif might end up becoming effeminate.”
“Subhanallah! Woman, what kind of talk is that? Calling him effeminate when we are sitting here peacefully? Insha Allah, I will never see him become that.”
“I am not wishing to see it either, their father, but Afif’s matter needs prayers. Honestly, he does not have masculine habits.”
Daddy said,
“You should consider the environment he grew up in. He grew up among women, so naturally, some of their habits will rub off on him. But as he grows older, he will stop. Besides, how long has it been since they left his side? Now he only visits them occasionally.”
The sound of his footsteps, which could never be hidden, made them all look toward the stairs.
He was walking calmly, one hand in his trouser pocket while the other was in his soft hair. He kept squeezing his face as if he was about to cry.
When he reached the dining room, he hugged Jalila from behind and said,
“Good morning, Aunty Jalila.”
“Morning, Saddauna. How was your night?”
Aunty Jalila replied, stroking his head.
“So sweet, big Aunty.”
He released her and went to where Aunty Afiya was. He hugged her too and greeted her. She replied with care and asked whether he was not going to school today.
“No, not until Monday, Insha Allah.”
The same way he greeted Aunty Afiya, he also greeted Aunty Kafilat and Aunty Jayyada. He did not even look toward where Kamilat was, and she too did not look at him.
He went to where Mommy was sitting, hugged her, and kissed her on the cheek.
Daddy, who was watching them, said,
“Sweetheart, I said they should wake you up, but now I will be the last person you greet?”
“No, Daddy. Your greeting is special.”
He said this as he reached Daddy.
All they saw was that he knelt in front of Daddy. They stared at him with their mouths open, even Daddy, who was the one being greeted that way. In surprise, Aunty Kafilat said,
“Well, today again?”
She held her mouth in surprise, knowing that he never knelt to greet anyone. According to him, his back would hurt, so he preferred to greet while standing.
He stood up and returned to the chair beside Aunty Jalila, then sat down and said,
“What is it again?”
He noticed the way they were all looking at him.
Daddy stood up, bade them farewell, and left. Aunty Afiya, Aunty Kafilat, and Kamilat also stood up and said goodbye. Aunty Kafilat and Aunty Afiya were going to work, while Kamilat was going to school.
Afif also stood up, squeezing his face. Aunty Jayyada looked at the food that had been served for him and saw that he had not eaten.
“Where are you going, Saddauna?”
He pointed upstairs, tilting his head to the side and pouting. She stood up, held his hand, and they headed toward the stairs.
Mommy, who had been watching them all along, said,
“Don’t tell me you are taking him to lie down again, after he just woke up?”
“Mommy, he won’t sleep for long. We will come down together, right, Saddauna?”
She said this while looking at his face. He had rested his head on her shoulder, even though he was far taller than her, since he was a tall person.
He nodded at her with his eyes closed.
“Don’t forget today is Friday.”
Aunty Jalila said without looking at them.
Aunty Jayyada pulled him by the hand and they went upstairs, while Mommy followed them with her eyes, shaking her head.
When they entered the room, he released her hand, removed his shirt and trousers, leaving only his shorts on, then climbed onto the bed and hugged one of the teddy bears.
“Saddauna, is this room for a woman or for a man?”
Aunty Jayyada asked as she looked around the room carefully.
He opened his eyes, which had been closed, and stared at her.
“Aunty Jayyada, that is an insult.”
He said it with slight annoyance and childishness in his voice.
She walked over to where he was lying. Without saying anything, she began stroking his head.
He closed his eyes. At first, he was listening to the way her hand moved gently over his hair, until sleep finally carried him away.
Only after she was sure he was deeply asleep did she stand up, reduce the speed of the AC, and leave.
