ABOUT THIS BOOK

Description

A Heart in Turmoil
Bilkisu Kachallah quickly switched off the TV, her heart pounding violently. For the umpteenth time, she dialed the Governor’s phone number again, but it was switched off.
Tears streamed down her face. She was not someone who cried often—she could not even remember the last time she had cried.
“No one can remove you from that seat. No one has the right to remove you. They are lying—there is no woman you have ever harassed. I can bet my life on that. Saifuddeen, please turn on your phone?”
She wanted to fight him, to be angry with him, but love was one thing she had given Saifuddeen long before she even understood herself. As long as she was breathing, she would never allow him to be disgraced.
A Promise to Clear His Name
She wiped her tears and dialed another number.
“Find out for me who Lami Ninja is.”
As she said this, she stood up and went into the room. She was heading to Kachallah House—perhaps he would pass by there. Her mind would never be at rest until she saw him.
She had been waiting endlessly for the Governor’s call; he should have seen her message by now. She wanted him to call and scold her, to call her a hypocrite, a liar, a wicked woman—just as she used to call him before. Why didn’t he seek protection? Why did he stand still until they came for him?
When her phone rang, she answered without checking the caller’s name.
“Hello, Your Excellency.”
“I hope your mind is at peace with what you caused to happen to him. Fear Allah, Asiya. Fear Allah.”
The call ended abruptly.
She slowly lowered the phone from her ear and whispered,
“Ya Ubayd, forgive me. I admit I made a mistake. But even if the Governor divorces me, I will not leave until I clear his name. I promise.”
The Name Behind the Accusation
So who exactly was Lami Ninja?
She called Fou’ad Salisu’s number. It rang twice before he answered.
“Fou’ad, who is Lami Ninja?”
“I also started investigating when I saw the news yesterday. So far, what I’ve found is that her full name is Lami Haladu. She attended the University of Congo at the time the Governor was teaching there. I’ve asked people to find out where she is now and the reason behind this accusation she filed, but I haven’t gotten any feedback yet. I’ll keep you posted if I get any information.”
“Thank you.”
When Asiya came out of the bathroom, Sumayya was seated, waiting for her.
“Has the Governor returned?”
“No. The First Lady just left—I think she’s going to meet him.”
“Maybe he’ll go to Kachallah House,” Asiya said as she sat on the edge of the bed and buried her face in her thighs.
“Aunty, are you the one who caused the Governor to be attacked?”
“Don’t disturb me, Sumy. Leave me alone to deal with what’s in my heart.”
Sumayya stepped back when she saw how fiercely Asiya looked, as if she might strike her.
