The Missing Tracking Number and Dada’s Suspicion
From the way they all fixed their eyes on him, anyone could tell how eager they were to hear him say something. He too understood what they wanted, so he said directly, “Imran, ask Dabo to trace this tracking number.”
In obedience, he replied, “Okay.”
Without wasting time, Dabo brought out his laptop from his bag, since he had come prepared. Faro handed him the phone. For the first time, Dada stood up and began pacing around the sitting room, both hands clasped behind his back. He went to the window and stood there. The way he stared into the compound made Yusuf get up and walk toward where he saw the coffee maker. He checked all the coffee powder available there and prepared the one he knew Boss used to drink before, though he was not sure whether he had changed his taste by now. Still, he made it and waited until the coffee maker finished brewing it, then carried it to him.
When he handed it over respectfully, Dada smiled. Softly, he said, “You’re the best.”
Yusuf smiled too, showing his teeth, and bowed his head slightly as he said, “He says thank you, Boss.” Then he left, while Dada sipped the coffee and kept his attention fixed outside, one hand in his pocket.
Then Dabo spoke: “The line has been completely disconnected from the phone. Every bit of information on it has been erased, and it has been permanently disabled.”
All their faces changed at those words. But to their surprise, Dada only smiled. Slowly, he walked back to them and sat where he had been before, crossing one leg over the other. For about a full minute, he said nothing, just drank his coffee. Seeing how they were all still staring at him, he smiled again and finally said:
“This is not the work of fools. If my calculation is correct, they took her only to divert our attention to her so they could do what they truly want. Imran, Faro, withdraw your soldiers from the gate where they said they would release my wife.”
Imran widened his eyes at the words my wife, suppressing a laugh. Faro reacted the same way. As for Dabo and the others, they only nodded from the professional angle, even though they had known Nimrah since her younger days. They did not know anything about marriage, nor did they understand what their boss meant at that moment.
Unable to hold back, Imran said, “Your calculation may be correct, but making that decision entirely still carries a lot of uncertainty.”
Faro quickly added, “There is definitely uncertainty, Imran, because that would mean they will carry out whatever they planned in this area. And even if they get what they want, there is no guarantee they will release her. They may even harm her before they let her go. These people are far worse than we think, Boss. I honestly think we should just attack them and bring her back.”
Dada’s Reflection and the Meaning Behind His Decision
Dada, as though he had not even heard what they were saying, slowly closed his eyes and opened them again. Then he slightly curled his lips and said calmly:
“From the moment calculation becomes confusion, even followers of religion become troubled. Because they will no longer know who they are meant to worship. Yet there is only one thing that can settle them, and the solution is simple. After the final Prophet, the Lord did not send another messenger. That means whoever tells you who your Lord is must teach you to follow Allah and the teachings of the Messenger of Allah, Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W).
The Lord created two things that give the world light, so that our eyes can distinguish what time we are in: the light of the sun, and the light of the moon. It is only dark clouds, the coming of night, or cold mist that can veil the sun from us, but that does not stop us from seeing the world’s light. As for the moon, the changing of the month from its beginning to the middle and then the end changes how fully we see its brightness, and during the hours when it fades, we are forced to use lamps. Does that mean we have gone blind? Or does it mean that this light itself has always been the staff guiding our sight by the decree of the One who judges?”
Imran let out a light breath and smiled, because he understood everything. He knew Zak-Shadow possessed a kind of knowledge no one in the world could rival, no matter how much pride anyone took in themselves. Faro, on the other hand, did not fully understand what had been explained. But since Allah had given him sharp intelligence and he trusted Dada with complete sincerity, he simply nodded.
Dabo and Yusuf had also learned from the good character of their boss. They were obedient in carrying out his instructions because they believed, by the will of Allah, that he would never lead them onto an evil path in disobedience to their Lord.
Dada said nothing more after that. He simply stood up and went into the private room, leaving them in the sitting room to continue their discussion, because the work was now in their hands.
Ruqayya Falls Ill and Dada Takes Action
At Mammah’s house, they were already in great distress over Ruqayya. She became completely unsettled, developed a very high fever, and kept vomiting. A doctor was called to examine her, and he confirmed that it was due to emotional stress, and that even her heartbeat had become dangerously abnormal. He insisted that she be taken to the hospital immediately.
So that was what they did. Ammar carried her entirely into the car. Yaya Bilal drove. Ma’aruff, Ja’afar, and Mammah followed in another car, because Mammah said she could not remain at home. When they arrived, emergency treatment began at once.
What further increased their fear was that even after two hours, the sleeping injection they gave her refused to work. And there was nothing they needed more at that moment than for her to sleep. The only name she kept calling was Ninah. It was only with great difficulty, and through the constant prayers Mammah whispered over her, that they finally succeeded in getting her to sleep. By then it was nearly 2:30 in the night.
Ja’afar and the others could not bring themselves to leave the hospital. Then, by the will of Allah, around that same time, Dada’s call came into Bilal’s phone. He had called only to ask whether Mammah was alright, but instead he heard something completely different from what he expected.
After a few seconds of silence, he asked, “Which hospital?”
Bilal told him the name of the hospital. Dada said nothing further and ended the call.
He came out of the private room he had gone into. Imran and the others, who had been deeply engaged in their work, all looked up at him.
“Faro, among the officers you gathered, send ten of the plainclothes men to KK Hospital. Send Ma’aruff’s number to them.”
Imran, staring at him, asked, “Did something happen?”
Briefly, he answered, “Ruqayya is unwell.”
With that, he turned and went back inside.
Imran returned to his work, while Faro picked up his phone and began trying to contact one of the secret officers he had assembled, without anyone knowing the man was even his relative.
