ABOUT THIS BOOK
Description
A massive pile of dishes was stacked in the middle of the compound—a sight typical of a wedding feast. Sitting on a low wooden stool, a young girl no older than fourteen sat facing the mountain of dishes. Tears streamed continuously down her face; by now, one would expect her to have grown used to this agonizing hardship. Single glance was enough to know she was severely suffering, her clothes soaked to the point of exhaustion. The small blouse and wrapper hung loosely on her frame due to extreme emaciation, and even without being told, you could see that hunger was tormenting her. She was naturally fair-skinned, but hardship had so discolored her complexion that her fairness was only noticeable when she raised her neck. She possessed a thin, delicate nose and a tiny pink mouth; despite her faded appearance, nothing could obscure the natural beauty God had bestowed upon Nihal.
A harsh shout suddenly barked at her, making her look up in terror. Raising her voice, Indo snapped, "Damn you, what on earth are you doing that you still haven't finished these dishes?!"
"Wretched creature with the eyes of a witch, you better hurry before you ruin my morning trade, because I swear I won't tolerate it!" Nihal wiped her tears and continued washing the dishes quickly, knowing all too well who Gwaggo Indo was—getting beaten by her was nothing new.
She swiftly finished washing the utensils and took them to the storage area. Just as she attempted to open a bedroom door, Gwaggo barked at her again, "Heyyy!.." Nihal slammed to a halt and turned around in fear, her eyes wide. Gwaggo shot her a furious glare and said, "What do you think you're doing? Are you going to touch your filthy mother first before coming back to scoop my porridge?"
"So the customers drink it and die since the loss isn't your mother's, right? Well, I am going to teach you a lesson for trying to enter Hansatu's room."
Gwaggo grabbed her and began beating her mercilessly until she was thoroughly bruised, finally kicking her so hard that her head slammed against the wall. Nihal let out a loud cry of pain while Gwaggo stood over her, panting heavily. "I swear to God, neither you nor Hansatu has the power to ruin me! Whoever tries to challenge us will end up a corpse, let alone the two of you—you're playing with fire!"
"Just wait until Malam returns; I'll find out why he dumped the two of you in my house instead of throwing you and your mother out into begging."
"I give you a few minutes to scoop that porridge, or else your body will suffer the consequences!" Gwaggo hissed loudly and turned to walk into the inner sanctuary of her room. Then, a sweet, gentle smile broke across her face, as if she hadn't just been screaming seconds ago, and she said softly, "Oh, daddy's girl, are you awake already?"... "Yes, by God, Gwaggo," replied Saratu—Indo's beloved daughter, whom she doted on so completely that she wouldn't let a single broom straw touch her, let alone a human being.
