ABOUT THIS BOOK

Description

Abubakar’s body was trembling violently by the time they got into the car. He and Hashim were in the back seat, while Sagir was driving. He said, "Innalillahi wa ina ilaihi raji'un (To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return), I have truly fallen into a great trial. Was Hafsat really a prostitute?" He buried his head in his lap. Hashim said, "Cool down, my bro, take it easy." He replied, "Hashim, stop telling me to take it easy! You know very well the promise I made to the Lamido and his council before they agreed to let me marry her, and even now, I am bound by those conditions. What do you think will happen if they start investigating and uncover this scandal?" Sagir chimed in, "But that must have been in her past if she ever did it; right now, based on all indications, she is no longer involved in that lifestyle." Abubakar said, "I feel a fever coming on, please take me to the hospital." Hashim said, "Please, Hamma, calm your mind down. What kind of hospital?" He insisted, "Sagir, for God's sake let's go, I really feel feverish." Sagir said, "I wanted us to go to Rahama’s place so we could get the truth of the matter." Abubakar pleaded, "Please, stop bringing her up to me. I don't want her, and I will not marry a prostitute!" After some time, sleep overcame him, and they went to the doctor's office to answer his call. After they sat down, the doctor looked at them calmly and said, "He has entered a state of severe distress which suddenly caused his heart to swell, or perhaps he was deeply frightened." He paused briefly before continuing, "He will need to be admitted for a few days to avoid any further complications, and he must strictly avoid anything that could cause him emotional distress." They replied, "Alright, by God's grace, we will take care of him." They returned to his bedside, quietly discussing Hafsat's issue. Sagir said, "I suspect Hafsat only did this so that Abubakar would break up with her." Hashim questioned, "Are you sure? Personally, I think destiny is simply protecting us from bringing a bad egg into our lineage. Our parents will never approve of this marriage." Sagir countered, "But Abubakar will be in a terrible state if you consider how deeply he loves her; just look at how much he has deteriorated in such a short time." Hashim replied, "Don't you see that dying might even be better and easier for him than marrying a prostitute? Our family line has a strict reputation; this marriage was supposed to be the very first time we married outside our lineage, and if it comes with such baggage, they will use it as an excuse against future generations." Sagir conceded, "That is true." Around 11 o'clock, Sagir went to the car, brought out a prayer mat for them, and left, saying goodnight. Around 4 o'clock in the morning, Abubakar woke up feeling completely weak, with a heavy sensation in his head and chest. He placed his hand on his chest, not wanting to recall what had happened at all. However, his heart could not let it go, even for a second. Aloud, he muttered, "Hafsat! Hafsat!! A prostitute!!!" He rolled over onto his right side. "May Allah remove my love for her, because I am fiercely possessive of her." Indeed, he was extremely possessive of her; even when he used to recall that she had been married before, it would burn inside him, wishing he had been her first husband! "So it turns out it wasn't even that; she is just public property, a dustbin where any filthy person can come and dump their trash. Tufah! Tufah!! Shame on him if he ever marries her." He turned over again. "I know for certain that when I love something, I love it with my very life, but if I see it will bring me trouble, I let it go. I know by the day after tomorrow she will be completely out of my mind." With these thoughts going through his head, he heard the call to prayer from the mosque inside the hospital. He reached out his hand and touched the head of Hashim, who was leaning against the bed, sleeping while seated in a chair. Hashim opened his eyes, and Abubakar told him in Fulfulde that the prayer call had been made. Abubakar also made an effort to stand up, but he suddenly felt dizzy and sat back down. After Hashim walked out, Abubakar managed with great difficulty to drag himself up and head to the restroom. He let cold water run over his body before performing his ablutions. He even had to observe the prayer while seated because he could not stand up. Before he could finish, a severe fever gripped him. When the doctor walked in, he began scolding them, asking why on earth he would drench his body with cold water so early in the morning.
