ABOUT THIS BOOK

Description

In intense anger, and with a show of dominance, he raised his hand to slap her, but then he saw that she had grabbed his hand and was staring at him.
“My father did not give birth to a fool for you, Faruk! Since I lost Ya Ahmad, Marwana has left my life. I have already gone mad with thoughts of revenge. If you make the mistake of laying your hand on me, I swear to you, I will do something you could never imagine. Let me tell you, Faruk, you have already turned me into a dangerously mad woman.” She exhaled as she looked at him, then continued, “The oppression you keep putting me through has driven me insane and made me numb. I did not return to your house with the intention of staying, because you no longer mean anything to me. I can do anything just to be rid of you. The only reason I have no choice is that Baba brought me back. If you say you will continue humiliating me, I will do something that will make you regret it when it is too late. I will do something that will make men who beat their wives feel remorse, because what I will do to you will become a lesson to them.”
He burst into laughter on hearing what she said, then snatched his hand back and looked at her. “I agree that you’ve gone mad. Though to be honest, I started seeing you as crazy long ago, Nasreen, from the day you first began disobeying my orders.”
“Then fine, the time has come for me to prove to you just how completely mad I am. The time has come for you to regret marrying me. All the regret you say you already feel, this time will be worse, because I will do something the whole world will curse me for,” she said, cutting him off.
“You’re going to kill me? If you want to kill me, then go ahead. Have you really reached the point where you think you can tell me something to make me fear you? You useless, ill-mannered woman,” he said, glaring at her.
“I’ll show you what bad manners look like. I want you to understand that you did not marry a well-behaved woman,” she replied without shame or fear.
Her heart was boiling with rage. She hated him completely; she could not even bear the sight of his shadow.
He began trying to pull off his belt. “Okay, let me start beating you right now, then let’s see what you can do.”
“Don’t wait. May Allah grant you the chance,” she said, her face hardened. Even though her heart was filled with fear, she knew she had to be strong, just as Marwana used to tell her. She had to rise and fight for her freedom. If this was the insult that had made him start looking down on her, then she had made herself a promise to reclaim that freedom.
Faruk, however, was deeply shaken inside. He was astonished by the things she was saying to him. Even though he was surprised, he held himself together and did not let her notice. He felt deeply embarrassed remembering how he had once told Rashida that she would never dare raise her eyes to look at him, yet here she was today telling him she could take revenge and do anything.
He lifted the belt, preparing to strike her, but she stretched out her hand to seize it. She began searching around the sitting room for something she could use to defend herself.
Rashida grabbed his hand when she saw how forcefully he had raised it to strike her. She was astonished, because Nasreen did not at all look like the kind of person he had described to her. It showed that jealousy over one’s husband could make a woman say anything. They were the kind of people whose appearance and calmness would make you think they were destined for Paradise.
