Description

Unexpected Joy and Quiet Celebration
The entire family was filled with happiness and joy over this unexpected blessing—something they never imagined they would attain and had considered almost impossible. Although some of them were quietly unhappy deep inside, they did not show it on their faces and kept it in their hearts. A small celebration was organized at home; food and drinks were shared as everyone joined in congratulating the one blessed with the good news.
Looking at her radiant face, glowing with light, one could easily tell how happy she was on that day. Her dream had finally come true; only sixty percent of her aspirations remained, and that hope alone was what gave her strength and a long will to live. Many people believed such an achievement was impossible for her because of her young age and because she was a woman.
She heard her name being called and turned to respond in her gentle, quiet voice. It was her mother’s younger sister, Aunty Babie, who smiled and said,
“We’re heading home now, Mariya. May Allah help you enter this new phase with good fortune.”
Mariyatul Kibdiyya replied in her pleasant voice,
“Amin, Aunty. Thank you very much. I’ll come and see you.”
“There’s no problem, you don’t need to come now,” Aunty Babie said as she led her children out. Zakiyyah followed her mother, bidding farewell to the other young women, promising to see them again in two days.
After they left, Mariya, Haneefa, and Ummi Aisha tidied up the living room, which had become messy from the gathering. Gradually, everyone who came to celebrate departed, leaving only the household members. Once done, they went straight to the bathroom since it was already Maghrib time, performed ablution, and prayed. Being full, none of them bothered with dinner; each found a spot and picked up her phone.
They sat chatting casually—mostly Haneefa and Ummi Aisha—while Mariya contributed only brief responses. When night fell, they prayed Isha’i, greeted their mother, and returned to their room to sleep.
A First Day at Work
The next morning, by half past seven, Mariya and Haneefa had finished preparing for work. It was Mariya’s very first day—the reason the family had held the small celebration the previous day. Haneefa looked beautiful in her white nurse’s uniform.
Mariya wore a long black gown with a white baby hijab covering her chest, highlighting her fair complexion and natural beauty. Though modest, her graceful figure was still noticeable. Her face was fresh, with no makeup except light powder and lip balm, in respect of workplace rules.
After greeting Umma briefly, they had breakfast served by the house help. Haneefa finished first and asked,
“Umma, hasn’t Abba woken up yet?”
“He’s in the living room,” Umma replied while examining some items.
Turning to Mariya, Haneefa said, “Finish up, let’s go greet him before we leave.”
They went together to Abba’s sitting room, greeted him politely, and informed him they were heading to work. He wished them well, his eyes lingering on Mariya’s elegant appearance. After leaving the house, each went her separate way.
Throughout the motorcycle ride to work, Mariya whispered prayers nonstop. It was her first day after a rigorous interview and selection process, and she was understandably nervous. Saying Bismillah, she stepped into the workplace and looked around. It wasn’t a very large establishment, but it was modern, well-structured, and impressive—a one-story building.
She spotted some of the people she had interviewed with and quickly joined them. Soon after, the interview panel arrived. One introduced himself as Barrister Hamza, alongside Barrister Waliy Abubakar and Judge Nuhu. They welcomed them, encouraged them to work hard, and expressed hope that within a year they would stand independently as barristers in court.
They were then led to an office on the lower floor with six desks and computers. Six interns were selected—three men and three women, including Mariya. Assigned her seat, Mariya rested her head briefly, wondering if she was truly capable of the responsibility she had always dreamed of. Her ambition had once seemed so distant, yet here she was, starting at last.
Gathering her courage, she turned on her computer and found a case file assigned to her, complete with preliminary details. Relieved, she began reading carefully, taking notes and researching diligently. Time passed unnoticed until it was time for prayer. They prayed at the mosque nearby, had a simple lunch, and returned to work. Gradually, Mariya began to feel at ease; the unfamiliarity was fading, and hope filled her heart.
Homecoming and Quiet Reflection
By five o’clock, they closed for the day. Everyone felt exhausted from the unfamiliar routine. Mariya took a motorcycle home, feeling sleepy yet content. On arrival, she greeted her parents warmly. Umma teased her, calling her “one of the nation’s great barristers,” making Mariya smile shyly, her dimples showing.
She retired to her room where Ummi Aisha lay resting. “Whew! I’m exhausted,” Mariya said.
Ummi Aisha laughed, replying, “Well done, Madam Barrister.”
After freshening up, Mariya changed into comfortable clothes, ate what was left from dinner, and finally lay down with her phone. Haneefa called to inform her she wouldn’t return until the next morning due to night duty. After ending the call, Mariya performed ablution and prayed, then checked the messages she had missed throughout the day.
As she lay there calmly scrolling through her phone, she realized something profound: peace of mind truly makes one’s day lighter and more fulfilling.
