ABOUT THIS BOOK

Description

Four of them were seated inside his well-furnished office. Each was dressed in a police uniform, except for him, the fifth among them, who was clad in a charcoal gray and navy blue suit. He was handsome and exuded a commanding presence, with a dark, smooth complexion, and appeared to be about thirty-seven years old. They were discussing issues concerning terrorism and the kidnappings currently plaguing the entire country.
After spending a long time deliberating, they eventually stood up, said their goodbyes, and left the office. He let out a brief hiss as he glanced at his phone, which had been ringing intermittently for the past few hours. Reaching across the desk, he picked up the phone to check and saw five missed calls from Auntie B and their Hajiya. He leaned his head in his hand, filled with immense frustration, knowing exactly what those calls were about. Letting out another hiss, he pulled open the side drawer of the desk and brought out a file with the name "Ummi" written on it and a "MISSING" stamp at the top. He opened the file and began reviewing it when he heard the office door being pushed open. Without looking up, he continued scanning the pages.
A handsome young man of about thirty-three years entered. Instead of walking all the way inside, he stood by the doorway, his face devoid of any cheerfulness.
"Morning, sir," he uttered briefly.
Without looking up, the boss asked, "Salim Abbas, right?"
"Yes, sir," Salim answered, highly annoyed by the subtly condescending tone in which his name was mentioned.
Only after a long pause did the boss look up to face him, throwing a harsh, piercing glare his way.
"I hope you are clean. You know I dislike working with drunkards."
Salim was left speechless, his blood boiling. He intensely despised his boss—especially since he had just returned from a three-week suspension, and now the man was looking for ways to humiliate him further.
Before he could even process it, he heard his boss continue speaking: "You may return to your position, but bear in mind that next time, it won't be three weeks, but a whole lifetime."
Turning on his heel, Salim exited the office without saying a single word, though his heart was seething with intense rage.
