ABOUT THIS BOOK

Description

She was kneeling before her father, who sat on one of the chairs in the room. A newspaper rested in his hands while a pair of white glasses sat on his face, his attention completely fixed on the paper.
For nearly three minutes she remained there silently before he finally placed the newspaper on the small table in front of him and looked at her. His face showed neither approval nor softness.
Then he stretched out his hand.
“Give me the report sheet.”
He spoke in a voice filled with disappointment.
Quietly, she used both hands to hand it over to him.
He collected it quickly, unfolded it, and began examining it carefully.
For about five minutes he studied the result slip before finally lifting his head to look at her. She immediately lowered her gaze, her whole body trembling. Even she herself knew she hadn’t done well in the examination.
He sighed lightly before speaking calmly.
“I honestly don’t know what is wrong with you, Hafsat. Allah knows I’ve done my best regarding your education, but you refuse to focus.”
Tears rolled down her cheeks as she replied softly,
“I’m sorry, Abba.”
“I didn’t ask you to cry for me,” he answered firmly. “I’m only warning you to improve before I begin showing my displeasure toward you. You should be ashamed. You used to take first position, but now look — not even second or third, but fifth position? Fine then.”
Again she whispered tearfully,
“Please forgive me, Abba.”
“Hmm. Stand up and leave me alone.”
She rose slowly as though sitting on thorns and walked quietly toward the door.
“Come back and take your report sheet.”
She returned weakly, collected it, and walked out looking completely defeated.

She headed straight to her room — a room she shared with no one except her youngest sister, Mufeedah.
Pushing the door open gently, she entered and found Mufeedah asleep peacefully on her small bed since it was already late at night.
She walked to her own bed, threw the report sheet carelessly onto the floor, then collapsed onto the mattress.
She lay there silently, unable to understand what exactly she should even be thinking about anymore. She simply held her head tightly with both hands.
Suddenly, her phone began ringing from inside the drawer where she had kept it.
She quickly sat up in panic after remembering she had forgotten to put the phone on silent mode.
Rushing toward the drawer, she opened it and brought out the phone.
It was nothing fancy — just a small Samsung phone without memory card support, one that didn’t even have radio.
“DEAR” appeared boldly on the screen.
The moment she saw who was calling, she closed her eyes briefly and sighed before pressing the green answer button.
Softly she said,
“Hello…”
From the other side came his voice.
“How are you, my girl?”
“Hmm…”
She sighed again and returned to sit on the bed.
He asked immediately,
“What happened? I heard that sigh, baby.”
She shook her head lightly.
“Nothing.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“I don’t believe you.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know… maybe you’re hiding something from me?”
“No… I just missed hearing your sweet voice throughout today, that’s all.”
“Hmm… really? You missed me that much, baby?”
He spoke Hausa with a strange accent, like someone who wasn’t fully fluent in the language.
Rolling onto her stomach, she replied softly,
“Stop acting surprised.”
“Okay thank you. I’ve just been busy today, baby. Mum forced me to do something for her. Imagine, she insisted I drive her to a meeting and then made me sit there waiting from 12pm till 4:30pm before we finally left.”
“Dear…”
“Yes?”
“You’re calling your mother troublesome?”
He laughed lightly.
“Ahh baby, you too now. Tell me — if this isn’t trouble then what is? She completely ruined my whole schedule today. Hmm… Mum can really stress someone.”
“Okay then…”
She shortened the conversation because she disliked the way he talked about his parents, but he seemed to think nothing was wrong with it.
Then he asked teasingly,
“Baby… what will I get from you now?”
Just then she sensed movement near the door, like someone was about to enter the room.
Quickly she whispered,
“I’m sorry, I’m feeling sleepy.”
“Okay… you’re tired of me now?”
Before she could answer, the call ended.
At that exact moment, her mother walked into the room.
“What kind of sleeping position is this?”
Hafsat quickly sat upright.
Her mother glanced at the phone lying beside her.
“Were you on a call?”
“N-no…”
She answered nervously while shaking her head.
“Good. Have you prayed?”
“I’m about to.”
“Alright then.”
Her mother glanced around parts of the room briefly before turning and walking out.
Hafsat slowly stood up afterward and headed toward the bathroom attached to the room to perform ablution for prayer.
