ABOUT THIS BOOK

Description

"Alright, Turai, we are heading out. Yahuza, let's go—drive your Inna and me to Hindu's house. Qazzafi, follow behind us."
Innah Abida didn't say a word, barely sparing them a glance.
"Tahira, Fulani's daughter, getting your hair done? How is your schooling going?"
"Schooling is going well, Baba Sojanmu. It has finally come to an end, and now it's time for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). We don't know where we'll be posted yet."
Yahuza chimed in, "Wherever you are posted, Baba Sojanmu won't let you reject it—you have to go. It's an education in itself. When I was posted to Taraba, I did mine there, and I met wonderful people. It's a unique experience on its own; one shouldn't just shut themselves away and insist on serving only in their home state. Qazzafi did his in Port Harcourt, and he went, experienced it, and came back."
Baba Sojanmu just chuckled, keeping his head down without even looking at Innah Abida—he wanted no trouble. Just last night, his military instincts had acted up, and he had spent almost half the night speaking fluent English about high-level matters. He wanted no drama whatsoever.
Innah Ruwayya and Baba Sojanmu both got into Yahuza's car, while Qazzafi followed closely behind in his own vehicle, realizing they were heading to Hindu's house.
On the way, Baba Sojanmu chatted with Yahuza about the military barracks, reminiscing about the old days of military rule, the thrill of it, the heavy-duty tasks they handled, and how they were deployed to quell riots even in other countries. He had traveled far and wide across Nigeria, which was why he was so worldly and well-traveled.
With this conversation, they soon arrived in front of Hindu's house. The first shocking thing that caught their attention was seeing the compound gate wide open.
Secondly, as they drove their cars right into the compound, they were horrified to see Hindu and Azgar lying unconscious on the ground near the entrance, accompanied by a large suitcase and a bag sprawled nearby.
Qazzafi's car couldn't fit inside, so he parked outside and hurried out.
They rushed out of their vehicles. Innah Ruwayya ran over to shake Hindu, who was completely unresponsive, her body stiff and rigid like a log. Qazzafi dashed toward Azgar, who was also limp and unresponsive, shaking the boy while glancing at Hindu as their Inna tried desperately to revive her.
"Yahuza, quickly put them in the car and let's rush them to the hospital straight away! Let's take them to the Bukavu Barracks hospital (Armed Forces Specialist Hospital Kano)!"
In frantic haste, Hindu's body was lifted into Yahuza's car, while Azgar was placed in Qazzafi's car.
Innah Ruwayya hastily entered the house, calling out Sabira's name repeatedly. When no response came from Sabira, she realized that Mijinyawa had forced her to leave along with everyone else, locking up the house behind them. Yahuza walked back to secure the compound's gate, and they immediately departed straight for the hospital.
Being a military family, they traditionally relied on the barracks medical facility. Even though Baba Sojanmu was retired and the children were now too old to be covered under active-duty medical insurance, they still received preferential treatment and access to quality medication at military hospitals.
"Look, I've been trying Mijinyawa's phone, but it's not connecting at all, and it keeps telling me the line is switched off. I hope everything is alright—though it clearly doesn't look like it. And as for Sabira, is she even with her husband or who knows where?" Innarmu remarked to Baba Sojanmu.
"Keep trying; maybe the call will go through eventually. If it still doesn't connect later on, we can try calling his twin brother."
Both of them were completely consumed by worry. Shortly after, they arrived at the hospital, with Innarmu riding in the back seat alongside Hindu. Qazzafi was left driving alone with Azgar, overwhelmed by panic.
They were promptly assigned a hospital ward, and the necessary medical admission procedures were completed. They sat quietly in the waiting lounge, too stunned to speak, save for Yahuza, who remained busy making phone calls to coordinate with people.
"Baba Sojanmu, do you think anything needs to be brought from the house? Because looking at the state Hindu and the boy were in when we brought them here, they're definitely going to be admitted. And clearly, something major and terrible has happened. Innarmu, didn't you notice the suitcases outside Hindu's courtyard? Plus, there's no sign of Mijinyawa, his car is gone, and Sabira isn't around either. Normally, Hindu's children only ever go between home and school, or visit our family house," Yahuza observed.
"So what if I saw a suitcase, Yahuza? The young girl is fighting for her very life, yet you're here spouting nonsense—is it because Hindu's success always bothers people? For over twenty years, people have failed to bury the hatchet? Stay out of my sight, I'm warning you!" Innarmu snapped furiously, her expression dead serious.
