Description
The Stormy Morning
"Night is the servant's place of rest." Whenever the night deepens, footsteps fade away as every human being retreats into their sleeping quarters to find peace for their soul.
On this particular night, just as the early dawn (Asbahi) was about to arrive, storm clouds began to gather. In a very short time, the sky fully overcast and unleashed a powerful wind, accompanied by blindingly bright flashes of lightning and a terrifying thunder that rumbled as if it would consume everything in its path. It raged on like this for a while before releasing a torrential downpour.
It wasn't until the call for the dawn prayer was made that the heavy rain finally subsided, giving way to a gentle, steady drizzle. The rain didn't completely grind to a halt until daylight began to break.
The aftermath of the massive downpour left behind a thick mist, accompanied by a biting yet incredibly refreshing chill in the air.
Since it was a Sunday morning, the streets and even the local neighborhoods were largely deserted. Everyone stayed huddled indoors—from school children to traders. Only a handful of people could be seen walking around, and even the commercial vehicles had not fully hit the roads. Because the ground was heavily waterlogged and soaked, and with the cold biting through to the bones, no one wanted to venture out at such a time.
HOTORO
Hajiya Laure was seated on one of the plush, elegant couches in the living room, legs crossed, busy scrolling through her phone. Her face showed absolutely no sign of warmth or cheer. She was dressed in an expensive lace fabric styled as a Buba outfit, with her head tie wrapped in an aggressive, towering style known as 'ture ka ga tsiya' (push and see trouble). Her elaborate styling further accentuated her look as a wealthy, typical Hajiya. She was simply waiting for Alhaji Salisu to walk in so she could dump a whole sack of grievances on him—trouble she had spent the entire night plotting in her mind.
Just then, Yazeed walked into the living room, dragging his feet sluggishly and heavily. He didn't even glance her way, steering himself straight toward his bedroom.
Filled with irritation, she called out, "Even if you won't greet me, you should at least tell me where you are coming from!"
Abandoning his walk to the bedroom, he turned back, sat down near her, and said with downcast eyes, "Why are you doing this to me? You are my mother, for goodness' sake. You know better than anyone that I am not a child anymore, Mummy. The truth is, you're just too obsessed with monitoring me."
She let out a sharp hiss before snapping, "It's your father who spoiled you, no one else! I know you're coming back from chasing girls around. If I were obsessed with you, I wouldn't have given birth to you in the first place, boy. You just hate hearing the truth."
He shrugged indifferently and asked, "Where is Daddy?"
Furious, Hajiya Laure barked, "Did you leave him in my safekeeping?! Since yesterday, he promised he would come back to see me, but he refused to return."
"Where did he go?" Yazeed asked.
"Well, if he had gone somewhere else, it would even be preferable! He is in his own wing of the house. He claims he has a guest coming over for a discussion, and he even strictly warned me not to dare come to his wing until he returns to find me. Now, look at how he failed to keep his word and refused to come back. Why don't you get up and go to his place, since after all, he's the only one who gave birth to you and I am just a nobody. When you get there, tell him to come out, I am waiting for him."
Yazeed chuckled and said, "Honestly, Mum, you nag too much. You need to learn to be patient. Daddy has a lot of work to do, so you should make excuses for him. And please, Mum, I don't ever want to hear you say I don't respect you. Respecting you is a must, because besides you, I have no one else."
She pouted and turned her back to him, signaling that she was completely unimpressed.
He stood up and headed toward Daddy’s wing, still hearing Hajiya Laure muttering complaints behind him. He could only laugh, because her dramatic behavior amused him.
The Horrific Discovery
It was a moderately sized living room fitted with every imaginable luxury of life. A massive amount of money had been poured into designing and decorating it; everything screamed wealth and opulence.
Aside from the freezing chill of the air conditioner, a beautiful fragrance filled the air.
Yazeed assumed that upon entering, he would find his father in the living room reading the newspaper as he usually did. So, he called out as he walked in, "Dad! Where are you? Prepare yourself for a fight with Mum, because her face is completely..."
The words caught squarely in his throat.
With eyes wide with horror, he stared at a massive pool of blood that lay splattered on the floor, flowing right from underneath the couch, since the seating arrangement was set right in the center of the room.
In absolute panic, he stepped around the furniture to see with his own eyes what could possibly be causing such a massive amount of blood to flow.
He let out a bloodcurdling shriek, leaping backward. His eyes looked as though they would pop right out of their sockets from how wide he strained them. Instantly, his entire body broke into violent tremors. Sweat began to pour down his face, completely defying the freezing blast of the AC and the cold morning air blowing through the house.
He began backing away, muttering to himself frantically, "No! By Allah, this cannot be my Daddy. Today I am certain I am an absolute fool! Did I drink so much alcohol that it's now making me hallucinate my Daddy covered in blood like this? Impossible! I strictly must stop taking drugs and drinking!" He spoke in a state of utter hysteria, as his mind had completely shattered beyond measure.
He turned and bolted back to the main living room, screaming for his mother at the top of his lungs.
Mummy’s heart dropped with a heavy thud (Rimmmm!). She sprang to her feet instantly, asking, "What happened?!"
Gasping for breath, Yazeed cried out, "Daddy!!! Come with me and see, I am starting to go crazy!" He finished his sentence by grabbing her hand and yanking her along. Moving in a frantic, breathless rush, she followed him as they hurried back into Alhaji Salisu's living room.
Only when he dragged her right in front of Alhaji Salisu’s corpse did he release her hand, stepping back with his hands on his hips, desperately waiting for her to tell him that it was just the alcohol making him see things.
Alhaji Salisu lay motionless in a pool of blood. His entire body was brutally hacked and slashed with deep knife wounds. He had been subjected to a horrific, merciless assassination—the kind of gruesome sight that would deeply traumatize anyone even if it were done to an animal, let alone a fellow human being.
