ABOUT THIS BOOK

Description

An Argument Between Friends

She stood up from the mattress she was sitting on, holding her phone as she prepared to leave. Her friend beside her quickly grabbed her hand and said,
“Please, Fatima, what’s the meaning of this? You want to leave my house already?”

Fatima sat back down.
“I just think you’re embarrassing us for no reason. Besides, I’m going to see Ammi; she’s been calling me since.”

Her friend, Husnah, frowned.
“Come on, Fatima, it’s not embarrassing! You know I don’t have a phone right now. Please, just follow him for me on Instagram — not for anything else, just so we can see his pictures, please! You won’t even talk to him, I promise.”

Fatima widened her eyes.
“Are you even normal, Husnah? I can’t stoop that low to follow a guy first. You know I have class.”

Husnah laughed, grabbed the phone, and said,
“Then I’ll follow him myself; it’s not a big deal.”

Fatima tried to take the phone back.
“No! He’ll see that it’s Fatima Muhd, not Husnah Usman!”

Husnah rolled her eyes, opened Instagram, and followed the guy anyway.
Fatima muttered, “Look, it’s a private account. I doubt he’ll even accept your request.”

Husnah laughed.
“He’ll see Fatima Muhd, not Husnah. Don’t worry.”

Fatima sighed. “If he accepts, fine. But I still think you’re doing too much.”
Just then, Fatima’s mother, Ammi, called her from outside. Fatima stood up quickly.
“You see? She’s calling me. Bye.”

Tension at Home

Ammi was in the yard, hanging up laundry when Fatima came out.
“I’m about to cook for the kids before they come back from school,” she said.

“Ammi, I told you I planned to go out with Husnah,” Fatima complained.

“Then go,” Ammi replied simply and went back inside.

Fatima looked frustrated and went to her room close to tears.
“She said I should cook for the kids again. Who’ll do it when I’m gone?”

Husnah shrugged.
“That’s how it is. Even my mom does the same. I wish we hadn’t finished secondary school yet.”

Fatima said bitterly,
“I’m tired of this house.”

Husnah laughed.
“Then tell Umar to propose already so we can get married and be free!”

Fatima frowned.
“Umar annoys me these days. Honestly, I’m starting to hate him.”

“Why?” Husnah asked curiously.

Fatima leaned closer.
“Have you seen Sa’adatu’s boyfriend? The guy visits her every night in a car! She even dresses differently now. I can’t lie, I envy her. I barely talk to her anymore.”

Husnah sighed.
“I feel the same way. Sa’ad gets on my nerves. I’m tired of that noisy motorcycle he rides.”

Fatima burst into laughter.
“At least yours has a motorcycle! Umar walks to my house.”

Husnah grinned.
“That’s why we need to leave this place. If Elbasheer accepts our follow request, maybe one day we’ll live like Sa’adatu!”

Fatima didn’t reply, just gave a faint smile.

A Crush and a Wake-Up Call

Later that day, Fatima’s phone kept ringing — it was Umar, but she ignored it. When she finally opened Instagram, her heart skipped.
Elbasheer had accepted her follow request!
But he didn’t follow her back.

She opened his profile and gasped. In the picture he’d uploaded three days ago, he stood beside a luxury car, arms folded, in front of a beautiful mansion surrounded by flowers and several other cars.

He was stunning — tall, fair, elegant — the true definition of a gentleman.
His smile, his eyes, his beard, everything about him looked perfect.

Fatima’s heart melted. What would a man like this ever want with a poor girl like me? she thought.

Still, she gathered courage and sent him a message:
“Assalamu Alaikum.”

Immediately afterward, she panicked, logged out, and threw her phone aside. That night, she fell asleep thinking only of him.

By dawn, she woke up with his image still in her dreams. Throughout the day, she kept checking if he had seen her message, but nothing. She sent another:
“Hi.”

No reply.

Lost in thought, she burned the rice she was cooking.
“Are you out of your mind, Fatima?” Ammi shouted.
Fatima quickly apologized, pretending she was sleepy.

Later, when she checked Instagram again, her heart sank.
Elbasheer had uploaded new pictures — with two beautiful women who looked like him. The caption said “Blood.”

Anger filled her chest. She opened his DM and typed furiously:

> “Wow, you can’t even reply to people’s messages? Do you even know who I am? Keep your pride for your family meetings, Mr. Big Man!” 😡

She sent it and turned off her data.

That evening, when she came back from Islamic school and opened her phone again, her heart almost stopped —
Elbasheer had replied.
