touched me, the way he looked at me, the way he felt for me; it was all
translated into this one kiss that had been simmering between us for such a
long time now.
Our lips parted slowly, but he didn’t let me go. He placed his forehead
against mine as I tried to steady my breathing. My eyes were still closed,
and my heartbeat was racing. “Look at me, babe,” he said quietly. I could
hear the smile in his voice. I slowly looked up at him and wondered if there
would come a time I would stop feeling these butterflies in my stomach
when I looked at him. What is happening to me?
“Hi,” I said, feeling nervous but confident at the same time. It was all a
juxtaposition of emotions.
“Hello,” he laughed, then kissed me on the forehead. He looked like he
wanted to kiss me again. “That was amazing.”
“It was?”
“Yes, it was,” he gently took his hand off my neck, his eyes never
leaving mine. The smile on his face didn’t look like it was going anywhere
anytime soon.
“I have to get back to the residence,” I said. What I need is a cold
shower, then an Islamic lecture on chastity.
“Are you okay?” There was concern in his voice. He was still holding
my hand, his fingers grazing mine lightly.
“Yeah,” I lied. “I am.”
We cut up some fruits from the fruit bowl and had a quiet breakfast on
the kitchen island. The only sounds were from the TV in the living room
behind us and the gentle crunch of the croissant we shared. We drank our
coffee from the same mug, and occasionally, he would reach and wipe

something from the corner of my lips. I wasn’t sure if there was actually
anything there or if he just wanted to touch me.
As he dropped me off, hands intertwined while he drove, we chatted
about my plans for the rest of the day. He offered to pick me up from class,
but I told him I had yoga after and had to study for my upcoming test. He
didn’t push it, and I appreciated that. Tamia’s So into you started playing as
we pulled into the visitor’s parking space. It felt just right. This felt so right.

Except it wasn’t.
