ABOUT THIS BOOK
Description
Love! Love!! Love!!!
It is the rope that coils itself around every soul. It was this same rope that hurled me into a pit and struck my life so violently that it left behind a fracture no medicine could ever heal.
I entered it without knowing that once a thief enters, escaping is never easy. Love is not sugarcane whose fibres merely become trapped between your teeth until you grow tired and throw them away. I wish I had legs strong enough to kick love aside, or a stick with which I could chase it relentlessly and beat it to death, so that everyone might finally be free of it.
They say love is honey, but when I tasted it, it became a deadly poison that destroyed my entire body. Love turned me into a weak, wounded and helpless woman.
People looked at me as though I were suffering from a mysterious illness. Some even believed that I had been touched by evil spirits. They did not know that it was love that followed me into the darkness of the night and brought me to my knees.
I gathered my belongings and withdrew from the court of love. As for me and that court, never again for the rest of my life.
I threw the bundle of clothes tied inside my peacock-patterned scarf onto the floor in the middle of my mother’s room. My eyes were swollen with tears, which had mixed with the white kohl around them and smeared across my face, making it appear even darker.
My mother looked at me and said,
“Do not tell me that you have abandoned your husband’s house and come here at this late hour, Laila. Have you lost your senses? Are you trying to disgrace us before the entire town? I hope your in-laws and co-wives do not know that you have left your husband’s house.”
Stammering, I replied,
“I did not come because of an ordinary disagreement, Inna. I have ended my marriage to Shehu. He wants to kill me, I swear.”
Slap!
She struck me across the mouth with the back of her hand. My lip split open immediately and began to bleed. I was heavily pregnant and could go into labour at any moment.
“Keep quiet! Do not expose your husband’s secrets. That is completely wrong. A curtain is meant to conceal the secrets of a marriage.
“Pick up your belongings. Darkness is already falling, so return to your husband’s house before your father comes home and finds you here. I swear, you will not like what he will do to you.
“Even with that advanced pregnancy, and even if you are about to give birth this very moment, he will not spare you. You already know that you have no place to stay in this house.
“Foolish girl! Young women of today do not understand the value of marriage or respect for their husbands. All they know is foolishness, quarrelling and packing their belongings out of their husbands’ homes.”
I remained standing there, wiping the endless stream of tears with the back of my hand.
Then we heard my father’s voice loudly calling my mother.
“Ta Asibi! Ta Asibi!”
My mother was too frightened to answer him.
The curtain covering the doorway was suddenly pulled aside, and he stood at the entrance, staring at me.
“You wretched girl! So it is true that you were the one people saw?”
He looked down at the bundle of clothes on the floor, then raised his eyes and stared at my mother.
Both of us stood with our heads lowered.
