As if in a dream, she felt her heart sink into a kind of heaviness she had never experienced before. Fawaaz’s words felt like a message from a world she had never anticipated, yet at the same time, they possessed a power far greater than she could suppress.
Her hand trembling, she let out a sigh. But before she could contemplate further, the blaring horn of the bandits' vehicle nearby cut her short. She snapped her head up quickly, her heart pounding frantically, as she watched one of the bandits approach them with an expression of intense fury on his face.
"I told you to shut up, or do you need to be taught a lesson?" he barked fiercely, raising his hand with a stick as if to strike them.
Terrified, Nabeeha shut her eyes in panic. But before she could even think of doing anything, Hajiya Zaytunah shielded her with her own body, saying in a calm, soothing voice,
"Please, have mercy. She is just a bit frightened, but she won't do it again."
Nabeeha felt as though she were listening to a story being read to her from a romance novel. But this was no story; this was Fawaaz—a living, breathing human being who had never shown any romantic inclination toward her until today.
She felt her heartbeat quicken, yet at the same time, she was trapped in a harrowing predicament. A part of her heart desperately wanted to respond to the message immediately, yearning to voice what was inside her. But another part felt that this was entirely the wrong time. Right now, they were in the custody of bandits, surrounded by terror and apprehension, and they still had no idea how they would escape.
Slowly, she averted her eyes from her rope-bound hands and let out a heavy sigh. Her gaze fell upon Hajiya Zaytunah, who was doing her best to calm them down. She forced a faint smile, trying to hold back the tears that were threatening to spill from her eyes.
In her heart, Nabeeha reflected on the sheer terror of the situation they were in. Yet, her heart could not deny how deeply Fawaaz’s message had touched her. From the very beginning of their acquaintance, he had always been a distant, reserved man who rarely spoke to her unless it was absolutely necessary. In fact, he was a man of so few words that even among his own siblings, his voice was hardly ever heard. But today… today was the very first time he had uttered anything resembling love toward her.
With her hands trembling, she looked at them once more, as if the phone were right there in front of her. Her eyes and her mind replayed Fawaaz's messages over and over:
"Promise me that you will stand by me, Nabeeha. Even after this ordeal, do not abandon me."
She closed her eyes tightly, feeling a heavy tightness in her chest. What was stopping her from responding? If there was ever a time to truly consider Fawaaz, it shouldn't be under these circumstances. Yet, her heart had already formulated an answer long before her brain could even process it.
Before she could sink any deeper into the world of Fawaaz that she had drifted into, the terrifyingly loud voice of one of the bandits shattered the air as he screamed,
"The time for a beating has come!"
The bandits lunged at them. They tightened the bonds on their hands and feet even further and began to torture them in various ways.
Hajiya Zaytunah, who was heavily built, was held down forcefully as she desperately tried to protect her children, Nabeeha and Hammad. One of the bandits delivered a violent slap across her face that left her dazed. Her eyes turned bloodshot from the sheer agony of the blow. Before she could even recover from the shock of the slap, another bandit forcefully grabbed her hair, violently wrenching her head to the side.
