Hauwa’s Pregnancy and Encounter in the Forest
This day was different from all others. Hauwa felt something unusual, a sensation she could not fully explain. She awoke in a state of joy, everything fine, and gently rubbed her growing belly. Feeling her child move inside made her smile. The pregnancy, a result of a man’s actions nine months prior, had brought her joy despite the circumstances. She knew she was not alone—her unborn child was her light and companion, even though she knew the little one could not yet respond to her words.
She walked into the forest to gather something for herself and found fallen fruits, eating her fill. Resting under a mango tree for a moment, she dozed off deeply until night, awakened by the sound of crying. Following the sound, she found a young woman dressed entirely in white, kneeling and crying. Hauwa was struck by her beauty, thinking, “No human could be this beautiful—this woman is extraordinarily stunning.”
Taking courage, Hauwa approached and asked, “Child of God, why are you crying?”
Through her sobs, the woman replied, “My son… my son will die if I do not give him this leaf. Only this plant can heal him!”
Compassionately, Hauwa said, “Don’t worry, I can find it in the hidden part of the village.” The woman replied, “I cannot enter that area, for I am a spirit.” Hauwa froze, fear gripping her, thinking, “I am just Hauwa, but today I face something beyond my strength—this is a powerful spirit capable of magic and consuming humans. What should I do? If I run, she may sense it.”
Sensing Hauwa’s fear, the spirit reassured her, “Do not worry, I will not harm you. You may go, and let me continue crying for my child (Dana).” Hauwa obeyed, retrieving the leaves carefully. With tears and gratitude, the spirit thanked her, touching her child slightly with the leaves.
The Birth of Jinah
Suddenly, Hauwa felt sharp labor pains—it was time. Hours passed as she endured the pain until the spirit returned.
“I’ve come to thank you. Because of you, my child is safe. Tell me what I can do for you, and I will do it…”
Realizing Hauwa was in labor, the spirit quickly assisted her. After a short while, Hauwa gave birth to a baby girl. The spirit held the newborn and informed Hauwa of her child’s arrival. Hauwa was overwhelmed with a mix of tears and joyful laughter. Using a knife, the spirit cut the umbilical cord and wrapped the baby carefully.
“Please care for my child and raise her well. Name her Jinah, meaning ‘spirit’ in our language. Do not let her suffer as I have suffered,” the spirit instructed. Hauwa understood the significance and obeyed, knowing the child’s future was entrusted to her. Jinah, beautiful like the spirits, grew under Hauwa’s care and the protection of her supernatural siblings, particularly Fally, a spirit allied to the human world through Hauwa’s intervention.
Jinah and Fally’s Bond
As Jinah grew, Fally and she fell in love. One day, Fally took Jinah to a secluded spot among the spirits, where they promised to be together forever. At that time, Fally was 18, Jinah 16.
“Jinah, are you ready to be with me, forever?” Fally asked, holding her hands.
“Yes, I love you and will always be with you,” she replied happily.
To seal their promise, they cut their fingers and let their blood mingle, then drank from a bowl of green water, symbolizing their eternal bond. Jinah removed her bindings and lay on a red cloth, while Fally, dressed minimally, performed a ritual with her. A snake appeared briefly, tracing Jinah’s body as part of the spiritual oath, then vanished. Their union marked a deep commitment and joy, despite the looming danger of humans and spirits interacting, which was forbidden.
As they returned home, the sky darkened—a sign of impending trouble. Hauwa’s intervention had allowed a human-spirit connection, something that normally brought misfortune. Upon arrival, they heard Fally’s mother wailing. She scolded him harshly, questioning how he dared interact with a human girl, and reminded them of the dangerous difference between their worlds.
Despite fear and tears, Fally reassured Jinah, holding her tightly:
“I love you, Jinah, and no one will separate us. I promise to find a way for us to stay together forever. Remember, you are mine, only mine!”
“Yes, I am yours, forever,” Jinah replied, affirming their vow.
Yet, their reunion was cut short as Fally’s mother intervened, taking control and separating them, leaving both anxious but bound by the promise of eternal love.
