ABOUT THIS BOOK
Description
The curse Sa'a had placed on him—warning that he would not end well with Hajiya—flashed across his mind, fueling his deep irritation.
Still, maintaining his utmost respect, he said, "Her condition is not an issue at all. I love her just as she is, and I will care for her to the absolute best of my ability."
Overjoyed, Alhaji replied, "May the Almighty bless you, protect your honor in this world and the hereafter, and grant you a peaceful union."
He continued, "Her maternal relatives wanted to come over to arrange the traditional bridal furniture and home decor, but I stopped them so we could discuss it first. I know you haven’t made any marriage preparations yet, so I have renovated one of my smaller houses for you over at LAMIDO Crescent."
He placed the keys along with the house documents near Mk.
Calmly, Mk replied, "Thank you very much, Alhaji, but I cannot accept it. It would make me feel as though I am living in a woman's house. I hope my words do not cause any offense."
Alhaji Nasir studied Mk closely, filled with admiration for him. Finding someone nowadays with such strong integrity and self-respect is extremely rare, especially in an era where marriage is often treated as a financial investment.
With a warm smile, he said, "Mukhtar, I am certain that even if I handed you this house in front of Farida, it wouldn’t undermine your respect. One cannot easily vouch for people nowadays, but I can vouch for Farida. Besides, I only bought it this very week, and no one else even knows about it. I bought it in your name. Therefore, I have gifted it to you, it is not a loan."
"I am very grateful, may Allah increase your wealth. However, I still cannot accept it. Please ask those who wanted to arrange the bridal furniture to bear with us; she won't be moving in immediately. We are traveling to the UK, and if God decrees our safe return, I have a small house in Gadon Kaya where we can set everything up."
Seeing how resolute Mk was about not accepting the house, Farida's father dropped the subject, though he quietly resolved to do something major and generous for him eventually.
He then asked, "What if I offer to sponsor your family's travel expenses? Would you reject that too?"
Embarrassment washed over Mk, and he lowered his head further. Tired of arguing, he replied, "Thank you so much, may Allah increase your wealth."
Alhaji Nasir stood up, offering prayers and well wishes, and added, "Let me send her in to you."
It didn't take long before she walked in, wearing a costly black abaya that shimmered elegantly, with blue rhinestones detailing the sleeves. She had opted for a matching blue veil instead of the one that came with the abaya. Her face was bare of heavy makeup, as she was never one for elaborate cosmetics; she had only applied a light dust of powder and some lip gloss, trailing the expensive scent of her Amour Amour perfume.
She looked stunningly beautiful, instantly reminding him of the days he used to go courting Iyah, when he would tell her she looked as beautiful as an Ethiopian Arab.
He fixed his eyes on her—eyes that were bloodshot, looking as though he were suffering from conjunctivitis, though it was actually the intense anger Sa'a had provoked in him that was eating away at his peace.
In a soft, gentle voice, she greeted him, and he responded warmly.
He stared at her intently. She kept her head lowered, feeling the sheer weight of his gaze washing over her.
Gently, he asked, "How is your health? Though I can see you have fully recovered, looking even more radiant—like a Yemeni Arab."
With her head still lowered, she smiled, feeling incredibly shy in his presence.
He kept engaging her in conversation until she finally began to relax around him.
"I told Daddy that you won't be moving in immediately. As for me, I will be traveling in five days. As soon as your visa is ready, you will join me there. Let's put off any talk about bridal furniture and home arrangements for now."
"May Allah bring us to that time safely," she murmured softly.
A brief silence fell between them. Farida was the one who broke it, asking, "Daddy gave you my hand in marriage without you explicitly asking for it... are you sure you weren't pressured into this?"
Deep pity for her swelled in his heart. Softly, he called her name. She looked up, and their eyes locked, holding each other's gaze for several long seconds.
