ABOUT THIS BOOK
Description
She was squatting by the well, washing clothes, and as she worked, she kept wiping away the tears streaming down her face. Even though the rain was pouring heavily, Inna Laure still did not pity her. Her whole body was soaked, with water dripping from everywhere, and this caused her to develop a severe fever. Her teeth kept chattering, yet even that did not move Inna to show her any mercy.
She eventually finished washing in the rain, gathered all the dishes she had washed, and placed them by the door of Inna Laure’s room. Then she picked up a broom and swept the compound, cleaning the house thoroughly. Everything Inna Laure had used, she cleaned properly. After that, she went to Inna Laure’s door, greeted her, and said, “Inna, I’m done,” while standing at the doorway.
“And what do you want me to do for you, you useless girl!? You’ve come to disturb me at my door!?”
“Inna, will you give me food?” Halimatu said.
Inna Laure stormed out of the room angrily and hurled at her a bowl containing some leftover tuwo and a chewed leftover piece of cow leg bone placed on top of it. “There, if you want, take it.”
Halimatu wiped her tears, then bent down, picked up the bowl of food, and went into her room, which had once belonged to her mother. She sat on an old stool, said Bismillah, and began to eat. The room had nothing in it except an old, worn-out mat and an old box containing Halimatu’s few belongings.
She hurriedly finished eating for fear of being late to school, despite the fever she had caught from being drenched by the rain. She opened the old box and took out her faded uniform, which had already begun to wear out from age.
She dressed quickly because she was already late, especially since they were writing their final secondary school examination.
Then she came out and stood at Inna Laure’s door. “Inna, I’m ready. I’m going to school.”
Inna Laure lifted the curtain and peeped out from inside her room and said, “Do whatever you like. You use school as an excuse to roam about carelessly. Get out of my sight, or else I swear I’ll come out and beat you mercilessly.”
Halimatu quickly left the house, afraid that Inna Laure might stop her from going to school, because school meant a lot to her.
By the time she reached the second entrance, she heard Inna Laure’s voice shouting, “Make sure you come back home early, otherwise you know the rest!”
But Halimatu did not even turn back, let alone answer her; she simply left the house.
She walked very fast because she was late and was afraid of missing the exam paper they were about to write, since it was the last paper of their final secondary school examination.
She hurried to the school gate and entered.
As soon as she got in, she quickly went into the class, found a place, and sat beside her friend Mariya. Barely three minutes after she sat down, they started distributing the exam papers. Mariya turned to look at her and said, “Honestly, Halimatu, only now? I’ve been waiting for you since earlier, but you didn’t come until now. Hmm, truly Allah loves you. If you had been any later, you would have missed this paper by now.”
Halimatu looked at her and said, “Honestly, Mariya, it was work that delayed me, and on top of that, it rained heavily this morning. And you know Inna would never let me come until I finished all her chores.”
Mariya sighed and said, “How long will it be before you get to enjoy life, Halimatu? Every day, always in...”
