The Night Drive and a Wife's Worry
Cars were speeding fiercely between the Kaduna and Abuja road. At least six vehicles, or even more, were in the convoy.
It was an intensely cold night in November. A thick haze enveloped the dark night, giving it a bright, cloud-like hue that seemed to oppress many residents of the Federal Capital Territory.
One of the cars belonged to the A.I.G (Assistant Inspector General of Police), El-Mustapha Maneer, and his wife was with him.
He was looking at her with concern and a desire to know the source of her distress. She had pulled herself away from him, gazing out the window, not bothering to lean on his chest as she usually did during their travels.
He thought hard but couldn't recall doing anything wrong to his wife since they left Kaduna after attending a gathering.
She was wearing a sweater, holding her arms across her chest, a sign that she was very cold, yet this didn't stop her from huddling away from him because she was angry.
He gave a soundless smile after taking his eyes off her. "Jiddah the troublesome," he thought. Everything she did in life charmed him; he loved her dearly, a love that was no joke. He could lose everything he owned for her. He loved her with a passion that Pherty's pen couldn't write on paper. The presence of his security detail in the car was the only thing preventing him from going to her, soothing her, and asking what wrong he'd done to deserve her anger.
Jiddah, meanwhile, curled her body further. Her heart was burning with resentment, seeing her husband's indifference towards her today. Without letting him see, she used two fingers to wipe away thin tears that had fallen from her eyes, continuing to stare at the road, her heart heavy with various thoughts, all concerning him.
She let out a cool sigh when she felt his hand in her palm. She turned to look at him through the light of the full moon illuminating the car. She couldn't see him clearly but knew he wasn't looking at her, which gave her the opportunity to slowly withdraw her hand, moving further away from him, pouting, her eyes full of tears.
His heart grew cold. What was wrong with Jiddah? Why had she changed towards him so suddenly?
Arrival and Uwani's Ambition
It was 11:30 pm when they entered Abuja. The sound of their cars pulling up caused Uwani to quickly stand up, adjust the powder on her face, and spray more of her pleasantly scented perfume.
She looked at herself in the mirror, turning her body, satisfied that she was flawless in every way. She even felt superior to the madam of the house in everything, but why did El-Mustapha see Jiddah as worth more than a thousand women in the world? Why did he see Jiddah as the star among women? Why couldn't he see how much her heart was consumed with love for him, making her jealous of her sister all because of him?
"I love El-Mustapha, and with the permission of God, I will marry him. I will have a place in his heart even greater than Jiddah's."
As Jiddah stepped out of the car, she didn't hesitate, going straight inside. In the living room, she bumped into Uwani coming out. She looked at her with surprise, which flustered Uwani.
"Uwani, what's all this makeup for? Where are you going this late?"
"Anty Jiddah... um... Yusuf came, but he just left. I was about to change and go to bed, but then I heard you arrive, that's why I came out..." she said with a smile.
Jiddah ignored the explanation and started walking, saying, "The house is quiet. Where are Arham and Aryan?"
"They went to sleep long ago, after they finished fighting about missing you."
Jiddah turned, saying, "Alhamdulillah. Because right now, nothing gives me more joy than seeing my children safe and sound." She went up the stairs. Uwani watched her, slowly letting out a breath of relief that her secret hadn't been exposed. She turned and went to the courtyard where she saw him standing, surrounded by police officers. He seemed to be talking to them, as they were all attentive, standing at attention, and listening to him with their heads bowed.
This prompted her to return to the living room to wait for him.
He came straight into the living room, his eyes on his phone. It seemed he was looking for something, perhaps to make a call or send a message.
The scent of his perfume began to draw her in. Her body started to tremble. A kind of weariness suddenly overtook her. She felt like she couldn't even move a finger, yet her heart was urging her to go and hug him. She didn't know how much she loved him.
"Welcome home, Yaya," she said, enduringly, in a soft, alluring voice.
He looked up at her with his sleepy eyes, which only further fueled the flame of her love. With a friendly face, he started to speak to her.
"We met you well, Uwani. You haven't slept yet."
Just his smile was enough to make Uwani fall apart in the living room. So, with all her effort, she couldn't speak, only shaking her head. If she forced herself to talk at that moment, she would surely reveal her heart's secret to him, and besides, she didn't see an opening with him.
Without paying her any mind, he headed to his section. She watched him until he disappeared from her sight. She looked at her body, up and down, shaking her head and asking herself:
Didn't he notice the makeup she put on for him? He didn't comment, unlike Jiddah's question. Then she remembered that El-Mustapha tends to be indifferent to everyone except Jiddah. She thought that whatever Jiddah did, he would appreciate and thank her, but because she wasn't Jiddah, he couldn't recognize the things she did for him.
Confrontation, Reassurance, and Sibling Rivalry
With a heavy heart, she went to her room. She cried from the inside out until the tears flowed. She cried deeply, feeling that only this would bring her relief from the pain in her heart before she could achieve her goal.
Jiddah, on the other hand, first checked on her two children, male twins, both six years old. She prayed for them, secretly wishing to live long enough to see them grow up. Then, she sighed, closed the door for them, and headed to her section.
She was in the middle of taking off her clothes when he walked into the room. She knew it was him without being told, so she tried to rush into the toilet. He quickly caught her, looking at her.
"Come on, Jiddatulmusty. What is all this anger about? I can't figure out my fault. Tell me."
She looked away, pouting. He wasn't angry because everything Jiddah did in life charmed him, and he loved her so much.
"If I won't get an answer to my question, then fine. I'll let you keep being angry, but I will also be angry with everyone and everything in this house until you stop being angry with me, and that includes I will stop eating." He turned as if he really was going to leave the room. He knew she hated nothing more than seeing him go hungry. As if from above, he heard her voice.
"It's not you..." then she went silent. He turned back to look at her.
"Did I do what?"
"I saw you with another woman talking, and you were speaking in low voices, even laughing. Do you want to upset me, and you succeeded? And what else?" Then, tears streamed down her cheeks. She hated nothing more in the world than to open her eyes and see her husband with another woman. She was extremely jealous, a fierce jealousy that he himself knew about.
"Ya Salaam..." he whispered, rubbing his forehead with his right hand. He looked up at her.
"Do you even know who she is? What would I do with that woman, Jiddah?"
"If that's the case, why did you take her aside where no one was, talking? And I saw her even touch your hand, and you didn't stop her."
"It's because of you, Jiddah. I know your kind of jealousy, and I didn't want to upset you at all, so I took her away from people to talk. But why, when your jealousy blinds you, do you forget who your husband is? Please, Jiddah, don't ever doubt your trust in me. I give you my heart so honestly!"
She was silent, not answering, but peace settled in her heart because she trusted her husband and knew he wouldn't lie to her.
"That woman is a Christian, Captain Johnson's wife. She was telling me about the things he's been doing to her. He brought her far from her country where she knows no one and is mistreating her. She felt no one could talk to him and make him listen like me, which is why you saw me with her. As for her holding my hand, you know for them it's not a big deal. The condition she was in made me allow it."
She let out a sigh of relief with a warm exhalation she hadn't realized she was holding, then tilted her head, looking at him. He told her, "Breathe, my dear... and don't repeat to act like that. I can't take it anymore, my dear. I am madly in love with you." Habawa! Jiddah quickly lifted her head, and as their eyes met, he said, "Yes, my Jiddah, I love you... please say something, I want to hear your sweet voice."
Carefully, she opened her mouth and said, "I'm sorry, my dear. Please forgive me." He pulled her long nose, smiling. They stared into each other's eyes for a moment. In the end, El-Mustapha withdrew his gaze and gave her a peck on her forehead and cheek.
"I love you, Jiddana..." she said, clinging to him and laughing. He lifted her completely, and they headed to the toilet.

"Uwani... Uwani..." she called in her very gentle voice.
Silence. Uwani didn't answer, and she didn't hear her movement, which allowed her to go to her room, calling her.
There was no sign of her in the room, but she heard movement in the toilet. She left the room and went to the staff quarters.
She didn't stay long before coming back with a young girl behind her.
"Look how Arham messed up this living room. You are in the house, but no one thought to clean it. What if a guest comes and meets me like this? Or even the master of the house?"
"Please forgive us, Hajiya. No one among us noticed..." she quickly interrupted her.
"That's not an excuse. Your job is to clean inside the house. I constantly tell you to check, and if they mess it up, clean it. Is it mandatory for me to constantly get up and keep calling you to come and clean up a mess? If you are tired of the job, say so, and we'll bring others and let you go, you know."
"Insha Allah, it won't happen again. Please forgive us, Hajiya."
"Call Jamila and others to come and clean this place up now. You know guests can arrive at this house at any time; it's a house that's never empty of people. When you finish here, check Arham's room to see if they've messed that up, too." She turned and left.
Banan watched her until she disappeared, slowly releasing a breath. Jiddah couldn't raise her voice at all; everything she did was done calmly, without hassle or oppression, unlike other high-ranking women like her. Banan sat down slowly, her eyes fixed on the huge, large photo of El-Mustapha in the living room. He was very handsome. Every time she came into the living room, she looked at the photo more than once, not for any reason other than the awe he inspired in her. She found her heart longing for him, a longing she knew she would never achieve, not even in a dream. He was not her type, not her class. He was far out of her reach and would never look back at her. She was afraid that someone would know about it, even the other staff members. She knew how jealous Jiddah was; she could easily send her back to her village.
Uwani came out of her room quickly, a headscarf in her hand. She looked at Banan with contempt.
"You, when you finish with this living room, go and wash my toilet. It's been two days since you washed it. You will even clean the room for me before I come out." She rushed out toward Jiddah's section.
Banan watched her until she disappeared. She wrinkled her face and pouted her lips, then turned to look at Jamila, who was coming in.
"Oh, just as I was about to look for you! Hajiya just scolded us. We need to clean up this living room now. Where is Indo?"
"I've been looking for you since. Indo is the only one I haven't seen. I don't know where she went." They started cleaning the living room.
Uwani entered the room with a greeting, her eyes on Jiddah's.
"Anty, I heard you were looking for me. I was in the toilet." Jiddah looked at her.
"You will take some clothes to Hajiya Ruhayma to check if there are any she wants to buy. She talked to me about them even before the clothes arrived. Be very careful, Uwani. I know you and your money issues."
Uwani smiled, arranging the clothes. "Insha Allah, Anty, this time there won't be any problem. I will take them to my friends' houses and advertise them. I know they will buy some."
Jiddah smiled without saying anything else until she finished arranging the clothes. She looked at her.
"Anty Jiddah, who will take me? Ibrahim has left to pick up Arham and Aryan from school." Jiddah stood up and went to her window, looking out into the courtyard.
"My car doesn't have enough fuel, but let me give you some money so you can put some in, even on the road before you get there."
Uwani beamed, though she didn't entirely like the statement. In her life, she loved to ride in big cars, see herself with important, wealthy friends, see herself in a huge, luxurious house, and be with a tall, handsome husband who was highly educated and wealthy. That's why she loved El-Mustapha—because he was the kind of husband she wanted.
Jiddah unzipped her bag and took out five thousand naira, giving it to her.
"Be careful with it, Uwani. I know it will be enough for you. Don't stay long, please. You know I don't like all this going out."
"Okay, Anty," she said, taking the money and going to the mirror to adjust her headscarf.
Jiddah didn't worry; with time, she had gotten used to Uwani's habit of rushing and trying to show off. She felt that this trait of hers didn't suit the upbringing they had received at home.
Uwani had been gone for a while when she heard the noise of her twins.
"Mami... Mami..., we are back!"
She smiled and spread her arms wide. They ran and hugged her. She kissed them one by one on the forehead, looking at them with a smile on her face.
"I hope you didn't fight in class today?" Arham looked at Aryan, who was also looking at him. (One look at them and you'd know they were identical twins.)
"Aryan fought, Mami. He even broke my friend's pencil, and he cried. So, I took mine and gave it to him."
"You did well, Arham. I will tell Abba to buy you some nice ones and take you to Magic Land. As for this one who never listens and is always fighting in class, I won't have anything to do with him. Get off my lap, we are fighting."
He got up without question, his face expressionless, and moved away from them. She picked up Arham, saying, "Let's go. Banan will bathe you, Mami and Abba's boy." He hugged her as they left. She thought Aryan would follow them, but even after she took Arham to Banan, he didn't come.
She only saw his uniform placed on the floor. Hearing the sound of water, she quickly headed to the toilet. She found him naked in the jacuzzi, trying to run the bathwater. She frowned, looking at him sternly.
"Come out before I start beating you in there!" He came out without argument. She held his hand, and they came out. She scolded him severely until he apologized before taking him to Banan.
Even when they came to eat, he didn't lighten up. Since he had been scolded, he was angry and couldn't even eat. He just kept turning his spoon. As they were like this, Uwani walked in with a cheerful disposition, a greeting on her lips.
Jiddah answered her, looking at her.
"You're just coming back now, Uwani? It's after 10:00 already. Was that right of you?"
"Please forgive me, Anty Jiddah. Wallahi, Surry stopped me, saying I must pray Isha and eat. But, Anty Jiddah, I made a lot of sales for you. Only two were taken on credit, and these are the ones I brought back."
"I'm not talking about the money, Uwani. God knows I don't like you going out and staying long. Please stop."
"I will be careful, insha Allah." She handed her the money, explaining everything to her in detail.
She looked at the twins, smiling. "My twins are back! Why are you not talking?"
Arham said, "Anty Uwani, I looked for you but couldn't find you. Where did you go?"
"I knew you would look for me. What's wrong with this one?" (Referring to Aryan).
Jiddah took the clothes and went to her room. Seeing this, Aryan also stood up and went to the living room to sit. He was waiting for his father to come so he could tell him since Mami had scolded him. Uwani also went into her room. Arham, meanwhile, got on his bicycle and started circling the middle of the living room with it.
The sound of the cars' sirens, which indicated their father's return, made Arham drop the bicycle and run toward the courtyard. Aryan didn't move. Jiddah came downstairs and found him like that.
Uwani, as soon as she heard signs of his return, rushed to the toilet to quickly shower. Whatever happened today, she would talk to El-Mustapha, hoping to find some peace in her heart.
He entered the living room with a greeting, carrying Arham. Jiddah welcomed him. He answered with cheerfulness, looking at her before turning his gaze to Aryan. He put Arham down and approached him.
"I know no one would hurt my child except Mami, right?" He nodded, looking at him, his eyes full of tears. Before he could speak, Arham quickly interjected.
"Abba, he fought in class, that's why Mami scolded him, and he is angry."
He picked him up, saying, "Mami did very well, Aryan. What's the point of fighting in class? If you fight again, I will beat you. Also, being angry with Mami is not good. Tell her sorry."
Tears streamed down his cheeks as if he had been slapped. With difficulty, he managed to utter, "Sorry, Mami..."
Jiddah only smiled, thinking about Aryan's nature. She didn't know where he got that character from.
El-Mustapha held him close to his chest, stroking him gently in a soothing manner. "It's okay. Stop crying." Just then, Uwani came out, wearing a full-length hijab and smelling strongly of perfume, her eyes fixed on him. She felt like she wanted to swallow him whole because of her love.
"Yaya, welcome home. How was work?" she said in her captivating voice. Jiddah looked at her, scrutinizing her.
Without looking at her, he said, "Thank you, Uwani. Take Aryan and change their clothes into sleepwear. They have school tomorrow."
Uwani rushed to him, taking Aryan. All she wanted was for her body to touch his, even once. As if Jiddah knew, she quickly tried to stop her by taking Aryan from his hands and moving toward Uwani, who almost collapsed from bitter disappointment.
This was the first time in their coexistence that she had started to resent Jiddah. Without letting Jiddah notice her state, she forced a smile filled with bitterness and suppressed anger, feeling like she might scream. She took Aryan and Arham's hands, leading them away reluctantly towards Jamila's room. She handed them over to Banan and went to her room angrily.
Jiddah quickly went to him. She hugged him and gave him a peck on his cheek. She looked at him with a smile on her face.
"All I have is you. I love you immensely. I don't wish for God to bring anything that will separate us, not even death. I prefer it to take me before you."
"Death will take me before you, Jiddana. Without you, this world is useless to me. Stop talking about it."
She pulled his long nose, smiling. "I don't want a co-wife, El-Mustapha. I hate her. I cannot live seeing you with another woman. I cannot tolerate seeing any woman near you, even in a dream. I just don't want her. I don't want her..." He quickly covered her mouth with his. They remained like that for several minutes before he picked her up and headed to his room with her.
Uwani, who was watching them from behind the curtains, began to tremble. She was cry
