“I swear you must enter this car. If not, I will shout that you are a thief, and you know we are in a market.”
A handsome young man said while holding onto the hijab of a young girl who could not have been more than eighteen years old.
“Hehehe, maybe another girl, not me. You must be joking because I am leaving.”
She replied while trying to pull her hijab from his hand.
“You think you can? I said you think you can? I swear either you give me my money or I shout thief.”
“Well go ahead then, I’m waiting. Mtchews, useless nonsense. If not because you are probably high on drugs you would never…”
She could not finish speaking before he raised his hand to slap her, but another man quickly held his hand and said,
“Haba mallam, this is not proper for a man your age. Why are you fighting with a woman and even trying to slap her?”
“Mallam this matter does not concern you,” the young man replied angrily as if he was ready for a fight.
The man said, “I don’t understand?”
The young man replied, “Just go your way and leave me with her.”
The man responded, “No. Let her go because I will never stand by and watch a woman being harassed in front of me. Can’t you see people are already gathering around you? Aren’t you afraid your picture could end up all over social media?”
The young man answered, “I don’t care whether it is social media or the whole world. Do you even know what she did to me? Since I told you to leave, just leave.”
He said while trying to grab her again.
The man quickly stepped between them and asked, “Young lady, what exactly is between you and this man?”
“I swear I was only trying to enter that shop to buy something when he suddenly started saying I should enter his car with him. I asked him why and whether he even knew me. Then he said if I refused he would shout that I was a thief. That’s all that happened.”
The man turned angrily to the young man and said, “So is she your sister or your wife? How do you just see a woman and ask her to follow you into your car?”
The young man replied angrily, “Why exactly is this your business? You don’t know what happened between us. She knows very well what happened between us, and I swear even if it is just one coin of my money, I will collect it. Either she pays me or she follows me.”
The girl looked him up and down before saying, “How much exactly? This man looks mad. What money is he even talking about?”
The man asked, “Young lady, what money is he talking about?”
She replied, “This is honestly my first time seeing this guy. I just arrived in town today from Abuja. I only came to the market to buy a few things I need. Maybe I just resemble someone else.”
The man asked, “So you are not from this town?”
“Yes. I’m a new student. I arrived from Abuja earlier today. Maybe I look like somebody he knows.”
She said sincerely.
The young man stared at her in complete shock before saying,
“So now you want to outsmart me, Meemsaly? Fine then, give me your phone. Let me call you and see if it won’t ring.”
She looked at him in surprise for a moment before eventually handing him the phone.
