ABOUT THIS BOOK

Description

My name is Aisha Farida Umar. I am originally from Katsina State, but circumstances brought my grandparents to the town of Sagamu. This is where my father was born, got married, and raised a very large family, so there is no town we know better than Sagamu. My mother is also a native of Sagamu. I am now twenty-three years old, and I come from an impoverished family. Absolutely everyone in my extended family, from both my mother’s and my father’s sides, lacks means. Although there are a select few who are getting by, they cannot be called wealthy; they are simply slightly better off than the rest. For this reason, we rarely attain higher education—some stop at primary school, while others start secondary school but are withdrawn before completion due to poverty. Only those who are relatively better off manage to finish secondary school, but university is an impossible dream, something they can only look at from afar. Our extended family is enormous, consisting of men and women, children, adults, and very elderly people whom Allah has blessed with long lives. My father is one of the elders, as he is extremely old. Ever since I gained awareness, I have only known him as an old man, and he has eventually gone blind due to old age. He is the eldest among his siblings, making him older and poorer than all of them, especially since he married up to four wives and fathered a massive total of forty-three children. I am his forty-second child, and I have only one younger sister named Munauwara. The two of us are the only ones who share both the same mother and father in the house, as our mother is his youngest wife. He married her when she was very young, while he was already advanced in years. His other wives are all very old as well; some of his oldest children are even older than my mother, and they have married off their own children, meaning they have grandchildren who are older than me. Consequently, I did not enjoy the warmth of a father; by the time I grew up and became aware of my surroundings, he could no longer see me, as he had already gone blind.
