ABOUT THIS BOOK

Description

In the dead of night, a time the wise often call the servant's hour of rest, I called it my time of keeping guard. I sat on the edge of my mattress, troubled by nothing other than a heavy sleep that tried to claim me, fighting it off fiercely so I wouldn't drop my guard and let my life fall into ruin. What I failed to understand in this confusing mess was whether someone wanted to kidnap me or ruin my life.

‘It must be to ruin your life, because all signs point to that.’

I scratched the side of my neck, accepting the answer my heart gave me.

"Oh, Deejah, what is about to happen to me? Who is this man trying to leave an indelible black stain on my body and soul? Oh Allah, here is your servant Nana Khadijatu; look upon me with a mercy known to none but You who created me. Let Your light guide me out of this darkness I am in."

The water dripping onto the back of my hands made me realize I was crying silently.

"Truly, my distress is different from that of other people. Is this how I will continue to live, unable to sleep?"

That was the question I had found no answer to ever since the threats of someone entering my room at night began, up until now as I repeated it to myself.

I scratched my neck again, feeling deep pity for myself.

"In these past two days, I have even grown thin. Sleep is a sign of peace, so lacking it will surely make one sick. Oh Lord, reveal to me what is hidden in this darkness without causing my mother any distress."

The movement I heard at the doorway made me jump up and press myself behind the door, my body trembling and my heart pounding. I listened to the struggle to open the door, and before long, it was successfully unlocked and pushed open slowly. I held my breath, watching the shadow of the evil person as he headed toward my mattress in the faint light coming into the room from the outdoor bulb. I didn't stop to figure out who it was, even though my only desire had been to identify the devil who groper for me while I slept—the one I had barely been managing to escape from.
