ABOUT THIS BOOK
Description
She was lying in the middle of a very small room that was pitch-black. There was nothing inside the room except a tiny palm-frond mat she lay upon. The cold weather was intense and biting; she huddled into a ball, covering her feet with her headscarf, while tucking her folded hands between her thighs, as she lacked even the luxury of a wrapper to cover herself with. She was no different from a prisoner sentenced to life imprisonment! Hot tears trickled down her beautiful face as she pondered where her life was headed. Ever since she was a child, she had endured torment at the hands of Goggo, who happened to be her father's younger sister. In a tearful voice, she whispered, "I wonder if Goggo really shares the same blood as my father as I was told?" Before she could finish speaking, the door to the room was forcefully thrown open. Without wasting any time, the woman who entered raised a container of water in her hand and poured it completely over the young girl. In a panic, she sprang to her feet and pleaded, "Goggo, please forgive me, by Allah I didn't know it was dawn already." The woman addressed as Goggo stepped right up to her, grabbed her by the hair, and hurled her out into the compound yard, shouting, "What on earth do you mean you didn't know it was dawn?" You wretched girl, just like your mother! Get over there, wash all of Shehu's urine-soaked blankets thoroughly, and hang them up to dry. Then go straight to fetch water for me before the queue gets too long." Saying this, she kicked her with her foot, clicked her tongue in disgust, and walked away.
