ABOUT THIS BOOK

Description

She was weeping a heart-wrenching cry. Just hearing it, you would know it was the kind of sob that tore up from the very depths of the soul—a pain no one could truly understand unless they had tasted that exact sorrow themselves.
"Brother Mus'af, what am I seeing? Is this real? For God’s sake, tell me it isn't true! Tell me this card I saw isn't real—say it's a lie!"
Among all her brothers surrounding her, not a single one uttered a word. The one she called Mus'af lowered his head, breathing heavily through his nose. One look at him and you could tell his blood was boiling; he was so consumed with rage that he couldn't even speak.
Mami, who had no idea what was going on, had just stepped out of her bedroom dressed and ready for work. She rushed over when she saw all her children kneeling in a circle around Aimanah.
"Mansur, what happened? Why are you all gathered around Aimanah? Is everything alright?"
Without saying a word, the one named Mansur quickly raised his head, handed Mami the card in his hand, and turned his gaze back to Aimanah, who was still crying as if her life were slipping away.
Dizzy and lightheaded, Mami scrambled for the nearest chair and collapsed into it, nearly fainting to the floor. She began to recite softly, "Innalillahi wa'inna ilaihi raji'un (To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return)... Didn't I warn you all about this matter? Muneer, didn't you hear what I said?"
Mas'ud spoke up in a cold, furious tone. "Mah, we weren't the ones who told her. She came into the house with it herself."
"All of you, clear out. You, Aimanah, come here."
"Mah, for God's sake, is he..."
"Shut up, Mus'af!" Mami snapped, her own anger flaring.
Mus'af stormed out of the living room so fast it looked as if he were about to take flight. Mansur looked at Muneer and said, "Go after that boy. I don't trust him; you know how he is." Muneer hurried out behind him. Mas'ud checked his watch, clicked his tongue in frustration, and walked out as well.
Ma'aruf gently took his younger sister by the hand, helped her up, and led her over to Mami. She buried her head in Mami's lap, continuing to weep uncontrollably.
"Hush, Aimanah. Stop crying so we can talk. I know... I know what you're feeling. Please stop, for God's sake."
