Dreams of Wealth and a Mother’s Warning
“Honestly, Inna, rich people really enjoy life. Did you see that house we went to yesterday? Wallahi, if I ever own a house like that, poverty and I will part ways completely.”
Inna looked at him, clearly tired of his constant talk, and said,
“So how exactly will you get the money? You were told to get a government job, but you said you didn’t go to school for that.
You were also told to start going to the market, but you said not now. You keep moving from one house to another—do you really think life can go on like this, Abdul Jabari?”
Abdul Jabari, who now preferred to be called AJ, replied,
“Inna, there is no real money in government jobs. I want to become a famous rich man in this town—so how will I go and settle for a government job?”
He continued,
“In this country of ours, when people talk about the wealthy, you never hear the names of government workers—only businessmen. That’s why I will go into business. Just wait and see.”
“Let me give you an example. If I get a government job and earn fifty thousand a month, what can that do for the three of us? There’s Nana’s school fees, clothes, and food.
And it’s not even guaranteed they’ll pay that amount. But in business, I can make three hundred thousand in a single day. So what is the point of a government job?”
Inna looked at him in disbelief and said,
“Abdul Jabari, whose child are you to be thinking like this? Fear this world and the people in it. Reduce this excessive love for money.
You have even abandoned your childhood friends because of your useless pride. Now you only mix with the children of the rich, moving from one house to another.
Do you even fear humiliation?”
AJ replied,
“Inna, how can I be poor and still keep poor friends? That doesn’t make sense.
When Nana comes back, tell her to wash my clothes—I’ve been called out.”
Before Inna could say anything, he stood up, went to his room, picked up his phone from the charger, wore a jalabiya over his clothes, and said,
“Inna, one day you will hear my story—but I will definitely become rich, In sha Allah.”
Inna replied,
“I will never stop praying for you. May Allah guide you. I fear that this dangerous love of money will lead you into trouble.”
A Dangerous Relationship Built on Greed
As AJ stepped outside, he saw her standing near their house, looking around nervously.
The moment he saw her, he felt a calm satisfaction—he knew things were going his way.
He quickly approached her with a smile. Before he could speak, she grabbed his hand and pulled him into a corner.
She said,
“AJ, I don’t have the money.”
He looked at her carefully, noticing her outfit—a short-sleeved top and tight jeans that stopped at her thighs. One look at her, and you could tell she wasn’t a Muslim.
Annoyed, he said,
“What are you saying?”
She repeated,
“I don’t have the money.”
AJ turned to leave immediately, but she quickly held him again and said,
“Please AJ, listen to me.”
He looked at her and spoke in Hausa, knowing she wouldn’t understand:
“If it wasn’t because I want money, why would I even stand here with you, dressed like this? If someone sees us like this, that’s the end. Once I get what I want from you, you’ll never see me again.”
Zahrah said,
“What are you saying?”
He quickly replied,
“No, it’s not you.”
They then switched to English since she didn’t understand Hausa at all.
Zahrah said,
“AJ, my dad almost caught me. I’m sure he now knows I’m the one stealing his money—and it’s all because of you.”
Without any fear, AJ replied,
“If I’m not getting anything, then forget it. From today, it’s over between us. I told you I need a new phone—this one is too small. People are looking down on me. How can I be with you and still be using this kind of phone?”
Seeing that he was angry, Zahrah said,
“Please, I’m so sorry. I will bring the money tomorrow.”
She almost cried.
Zahrah truly loved AJ, and that was why she couldn’t stand upsetting him.
But AJ only cared about her because of her parents’ money—he was using her.
He quickly smiled and said,
“That’s better.”
She said,
“So you’re happy now?”
Immediately, he laughed. She ran to hug him and said,
“I love you so much, my AJ.”
He didn’t respond—he just wanted to get her off him.
A Risky Decision
When Zahrah got home, she started thinking about how to get the money for AJ, especially since her father was around.
She quietly went toward her mother’s room, but when she got there, she saw her mother fully dressed up and looking beautiful like a bride.
She quietly stepped back and went to her father’s room instead.
She found him sleeping.
She moved carefully toward the place she usually took money from. From the way she moved, you could tell she was not at ease.
There was a small hidden compartment under his drawer.
Zahrah slowly opened it—
And immediately, she saw a huge amount of money… far more than she had ever seen before.
