ABOUT THIS BOOK

Description

The spacious courtyard of the large orphanage was filled with many children under the age of five, each occupied with their own activities. Most of them were playing, as expected of children their age. Since it was Saturday and there were no lessons until the afternoon, only the younger children remained in the courtyard, while the older ones were at the back washing clothes and carrying out the weekly cleaning that had become a tradition in the home.

He sat beside the building that housed their dormitories, drawing his knees up to his chest as he watched them. He was a quiet boy who disliked noise and the mischievous behaviour common among children his age. Most of the time, he could be found sitting alone, silently watching the others without joining their games.

No matter how much Maman Yara tried to encourage him to relax and mingle with the other children, he refused. Even so, he was exceptionally intelligent. He had a sharp mind and learned things very quickly. His remarkable ability often amazed them; whatever he was taught remained firmly in his memory.

His most outstanding quality was compassion. Although he disliked noise, he possessed a deep sense of sympathy and affection for every child in the orphanage.

The gate slowly began to open. At once, the children stopped playing and fixed their eyes on it, eager to see what was happening.

A small car entered the courtyard and pulled over to one side. The children immediately ran towards it in excitement. He also stood up with a smile and hurried towards the vehicle, even breaking into a slight run.

Before he reached it, the occupants had stepped out. A man who appeared to be around forty years old emerged, holding the hand of a little boy who could not have been more than four or five. From the way the children surrounded him, it was obvious that the man was very important to them.

He brought a plastic bag out of the car and began distributing sweets, gently patting each child on the head. Every child who received one walked away happily.

He continued until he had given sweets to all of them and sent them away. Then he turned towards the little boy standing quietly to one side with the sleeve of his shirt in his mouth.
