ABOUT THIS BOOK
Description
Malam Shu’aibu and His Family
He was walking hurriedly as if he might fall, simply because he wanted to quickly take the medicine to them.
This was Malam Shu’aibu, a true son of Kano. He and his parents were from Kano, in the Fanshekara area. He had one wife and two children. Isma’il was the oldest, and the younger was a girl, Maryam, who was still a baby carried on the back not too long ago.
Malam Shu’aibu and his wife, Huwaila, lived in the Yamadawa area where he worked selling fruits such as oranges, bananas, and more. Huwaila was a good woman who understood her responsibilities. Although her father-in-law had long passed away, she always made sure there was something to send to her mother-in-law because Malam Shu’aibu visited his mother every day.
However, Huwaila had a problem—quarreling and a very sharp tongue. Her speech was hardly pleasant, not to others and not even to her own children. Malam Shu’aibu had warned her many times, particularly about the way she spoke to the children, yet she refused to change. Maryam was now ten, while Isma’il was eleven. There was barely an age difference between them. And now it was Isma’il who was sick, so she had taken him to the hospital. Malam Shu’aibu was returning with the prescribed drugs.
Conflict Between Mother and Daughter
As he entered the house, he overheard her shouting loudly:
"You are a black-hearted child! I don’t know which family you got this behavior from, because no one from my family has such a bad character. It must be from your father’s side! A child like you with such a poisoned tongue—if your mouth could grow longer, I wouldn’t even know where it would reach!"
Maryam stood there, glaring at her mother without fear.
"Mother, your mouth is even longer now than when I was small. Just look at how your lips have become!" she answered, pulling her upper and lower lips.
"You wretched child! Are you saying my mouth looks like this?"
"I swear, mother, I am telling the truth."
"You will see today! I swear by Allah, I will almost kill you in this house!"
Maryam pouted and headed for the door.
"If you step outside, I will beat you until your body swells. Go on if you want, bastard! Leave and see!"
Maryam still walked out, muttering. And there she met her father at the doorway.
She quickly smiled and said, “Oh Baba! Welcome! Did you buy the medicine?”
He held her hand. “What did you do this time that made your mother angry?”
"Nothing, father. I was just staying home like she told me. Then Zuwaira came and started teasing me. She mocked me and made faces, so I followed her to their house and punched her until her nose bled—just like I saw John Cena do to Omega. They barely pulled her away from me. Baba, I didn’t know I was also a champion! Someone reported me to mother, and that’s why she is scolding me."
He shook his head and placed a hand on her head gently:
"Maryam, why don’t you listen? If you want us to have peace, stop this constant fighting. You behave like someone living in a boxing arena. If you want us to live in harmony, don’t let me hear this again."
Maryam answered, “I will stop, but make them stop calling me ‘yar caskale (girl with a twisted mouth).”
A Husband’s Final Warning to His Wife
That night, around midnight, after the children were asleep, he sat beside Huwaila and called her name.
"Huwaila, I want us to talk. Even though this is not the first time, I want this to be the last warning."
She kept quiet and listened.
"These things you say to our children—do you even think about the harm? Words have weight. Since these children were still breastfeeding, I kept asking you to control your mouth. But today, the things you said to Isma’il were terrible. If something happens to him, what will you gain? I have the right to take another wife, even if it doesn’t guarantee more children, but we know we have no problem. For God’s sake, change your speech. Children need prayers, not curses."
Tears rolled down her face.
"Insha Allah, I will stop. I say these things and later regret them, but I will try."
He nodded, pulled her close, and advised her with calm, wise words.
Meanwhile, Maryam was outside later threatening an elderly woman, Rakiya, who sold dambu. A boiling pot spilled after Maryam poured water, covering Rakiya and causing chaos. Soon the whole neighborhood was chasing Maryam, who ran for her life until she took refuge near a youth gathering, calling:
"Help me! A mad woman is chasing me!"
The youths, seeing Rakiya’s face covered in ashes and her mouth darkened by soot, assumed she was truly insane and held her down while Maryam hid, breathing heavily.
Rakiya struggled as her husband returned to find his wife surrounded, and he tried to defend her. The scene grew wild and loud, the chaos spreading through the neighborhood like a storm.
