ABOUT THIS BOOK

Description

The Glittering Arrival

The sound of her heels echoed with each step, a rhythm demanding attention. One glance at her attire confirmed that no small fortune had been spent on her; it was obvious that such lavish spending on her appearance was routine.

She was hardly more than twenty, her figure draped in a princess-like gown flowing gracefully to the floor. The dress was slit from the chest downward, an intentional design of elegance. Golden fabric shimmered under the lights, glowing like polished metal.

Her feet were bound in expensive strappy heels. Dark brown hair, styled into flowing blonde waves, cascaded over her shoulders. Her glowing face was framed by careful makeup. From earrings to rings to the chain around her neck, every possible place carried jewelry, all glittering in gold. She radiated wealth — a living statue of gold.

At her side stood three close friends, more like sisters than companions. Together they completed the portrait of sophistication.

There was Ibtihaaj, originally from Australia but living in Dubai, raised in Buddhism with her parents. Next, Ansha, born in Nigeria but raised in Europe, Christian by background. Third was Aahila, from Malaysia, who carried herself with quiet grace.

The four had been inseparable since primary school in America, staying together through secondary school. But at university, their bond stretched thin as they pursued different courses of study. Two years had passed without reunion.

Now fate drew them back. It was Ansha’s birthday, and her wealthy parents had arranged a grand celebration in Nigeria. This was not only her first birthday at home but also the first time the four had reunited on African soil. The joy was overwhelming.

When the last member arrived, Samiupter D’Souza, Ansha rushed to embrace her.

“Samiupter! I thought when you returned to India we were parting forever,” she exclaimed. “But here we are again, thanks to my birthday. I’m so happy.”

Samiupter smiled, adjusting the box in her hands. Before she could reply, Ansha’s phone rang.

“Oh, it’s Papa,” Ansha announced. “Let’s go. I was waiting for you, Samiupter, that’s why I haven’t cut the cake yet. Now that you’re here, we can begin.”

They entered a luxurious car, with Aahila at the wheel, leaving the airport behind.

Samiupter, though born in America, had an Indian maternal family. No one at home knew she had come to Nigeria; attending Ansha’s birthday was her secret adventure. What awaited them was yet to unfold.

The Warm Reception

After ten minutes of driving, the car pulled into a grand home belonging to Sailuba, Ansha’s aunt. As they parked and stepped out gracefully, they entered the spacious living room.

Inside sat Fadeelah, enjoying a Turkish drama since she had no classes that day. Hearing greetings, she quickly replied warmly, “Peace be upon you too, and the mercy and blessings of God.”

She rose, face glowing with happiness, and welcomed them with respect. Soon, Sailuba’s mother appeared from her bedroom, joining in the greetings.

Fadeelah’s joy was plain. She deeply respected Madam Rafi’at, who had come with them. She admired her greatly, believing that obedience to her was the path to achieving her own dreams.

Already, Fadeelah was planning. She longed to finish her drama quickly and prepare to accompany Madam Rafi’at to Uncle Mai Kyau’s house, where she hoped to meet Maleek, newly returned. The arrival of Madam Rafi’at at her home was perfectly timed with her personal hopes.

Without delay, Fadeelah packed clothes into a box, added belongings, bathed, applied makeup, and dressed elegantly. Sitting on her bed, she waited patiently for Madam Rafi’at to leave the room so she could follow her to Uncle Mai Kyau’s house.

Tensions in Kano

Meanwhile, in Kano, another story unfolded.

Afeefah was behind the wheel, driving nervously. In panic, she reversed too quickly and hit something. Alarmed, she lifted her head, fearing she had struck someone.

“Afeefah, are you alright?” asked Lailah, concern heavy in her voice. “Move to the back seat and let me drive before you cause an accident. You nearly hit someone.”

Mah’eesha added, “Let’s check the car you hit. It might be damaged.”

They parked, stepped out, and approached the other vehicle, apologizing profusely. “We’re sorry, truly. Afeefah isn’t used to careful driving, but we mean no harm.”

The women in the other car smiled kindly. “No problem. You didn’t cause any damage.”

Relieved, they thanked them and returned. Lailah took the wheel, Afeefah moved to the passenger seat, and with Mah’eesha they drove toward Yaya Shahid’s house. Their friend Deejarh had planned to join but stayed home with stomach pain at Afeefah’s suggestion.

At the gate, the keeper opened for them. They parked neatly and approached the living room.

Mah’eesha knocked impatiently. “Why upset already?” Afeefah frowned. “Maybe she’s busy in the kitchen. You always assume the worst about Aeezath. Honestly, some of the problems between you two are your fault.”

Mah’eesha fell silent, realizing there was truth in the words. Aeezath had never been outright rude unless provoked. Much resentment stemmed from the fact that Shahid had married Aeezath instead of Mah’eesha’s close friend, who had once longed for him.

The door opened. A tall, well-built young man appeared, dressed in singlet and shorts, his resemblance to their Uncle Sagir undeniable. He greeted briefly and let them in.

Once seated, Shahid finally warmed, asking how they were doing.

“We’re fine,” Afeefah answered eagerly. “But where’s Aunt Aeezath? Surely she’s here.”

Shahid grinned. “She’s in the kitchen. Believe it or not, she only just started making breakfast around noon. She’s kept me starving all morning.”

Laughter filled the room. “She must be questioned,” Afeefah teased. “How could she keep you hungry till now? Let me go and see her myself.” Leaving her headscarf on the couch, she headed toward the kitchen.

Shahid’s eyes followed her with admiration. He had always liked Afeefah for her calmness, beauty, and charm. Among all the cousins, she was one of the few he truly appreciated.

Turning back, he asked, “So, Lailah, is it true Maleek has returned? I find it hard to believe.”

Hidden Desires and New Paths

Shahid’s words hung in the air. Mah’eesha, uneasy, stayed silent. She respected her brother too much to speak recklessly. Lailah hesitated, almost speaking but withdrawing, her thoughts tangled between truth and caution.

Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Afeefah now faced Aeezath directly. Their first meeting promised new revelations, tensions, and shifting alliances within the family.

In Abuja, Fadeelah’s heart raced as she prepared to follow Madam Rafi’at to Uncle Mai Kyau’s house. She believed her future was about to change, tied somehow to the arrival of Maleek.

In Nigeria’s capital and in Kano, destinies were converging. What began as a birthday celebration, a family visit, and a car mishap was quietly shaping greater conflicts, deeper desires, and secrets waiting to unfold.

The lingering question remained: what will happen next?
