A Journey Filled with Hope
They were traveling in a beautiful BMW, and with just one glance you could tell it was brand new, as if it had just been taken out of its wrapping, judging by how brightly it shone and sparkled. The driver handled the car with great calm and skill, while the woman sitting beside him shifted uncomfortably, her heavy pregnancy clearly showing, as though whatever was inside her was eager to come out at any moment. She adjusted herself, then turned toward him gently and warmly, saying,
“Abu Sumayya, what kind of journey is this that you’re taking like this? Please, for Allah’s sake, drive a little faster. I’m really eager to arrive and see myself in front of my father and my mother.”
The softness of her voice alone was enough to show that she was his wife. Without taking his eyes off the road, he skillfully turned the steering wheel into the bend ahead and slightly increased the speed, then said,
“My princess, is that how it is for you?”
“Just a little faster,” she replied, turning to look at the back seat where their two little daughters lay fast asleep. With one look, you could tell they were twins because of how strikingly alike they were. She took a deep, contented breath, gently rubbed her protruding belly, and said,
“Alhamdulillah. Abu Sumayya, I can’t wait for us to get home so I can see the joy that will light up my father’s face when he sees me with these beautiful grandchildren Allah has blessed him with, after seven long years of being apart. And there’s another gift with me too—this one here,” she said, referring to her pregnancy, “which I pray Allah makes a companion for them. I’m sure that will increase his happiness even more and ease the pain I once caused him.”
“May Allah grant you a safe delivery, my princess, and give us what we hope for, fulfilling our wishes and confirming the happiness you imagine for your father,” he replied.
“Amin, Abu Sumayya,” she said, resting her head on his shoulder.
A Sudden Turn of Fate
Silence followed for about five minutes before she spoke again. “Honestly, it feels like we’re not even moving. The road seems longer than it used to be. Maybe it’s because I haven’t traveled on it in a long time?”
He smiled and said, “My princess, you’re just being impatient. I’m actually driving quite well. Be patient—we’ll arrive slowly but surely, in sha Allah. We have only five kilometers left. Haven’t you heard the Hausa saying, ‘Slow and steady doesn’t stop one from arriving’—”
Before he could finish, she interrupted, “But sometimes you arrive late, and I don’t like that,” she said, pouting as she straightened up. “Abu Sumayya, I just felt a slight twist in my belly.”
He immediately slowed down and said, “Subhanallah, my princess—has it started?” He asked, turning to her in alarm.
She frowned slightly and replied, “I don’t think so. My due date is next month, on the 13th. And today is only the 25th of this month.”
She had barely finished speaking when another car suddenly sped between them, cutting sharply in front. There was the screeching sound of brakes—qiiiiiiiii—followed by violent impacts. Their car was struck and thrown into another vehicle behind them, which was also trying to swerve away. He struggled with all his strength and driving skill to control the steering wheel, but destiny—written long ago by Allah—cannot be avoided. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t regain control or bring the car to a safe stop.
Realizing this, he instinctively reached out to hold his wife, but her head had already smashed into the car’s glass, throwing her partly out of the vehicle, her upper body outside while the rest remained inside. In panic and dread, he tried to pull her back in when suddenly they crashed into something that brought the car to an abrupt halt. At that exact moment, his own head slammed forcefully into the dashboard. Instantly, he felt all the systems in his body shut down—his senses, his hearing, his sight—all faded away at once.
Chaos, Rescue, and Uncertainty
People standing along the road, shocked by the scene, began reciting prayers as they rushed toward the wreck to help. The car had been completely crushed against a massive rock. One look at it and you would swear that no one inside could possibly be alive. Seeing blood flowing from beneath the car, the crowd grew more determined, trying desperately to pry it open from all sides.
They pulled him out first, then managed to extract his wife. Her face was completely covered in blood—you couldn’t even recognize who she was. She lay motionless, like a corpse. Panic truly set in when they noticed her swollen belly, inside which the baby was still moving violently, while blood continued to gush from beneath her.
Confused and alarmed, one of the men looked at those attending to her husband and shouted, “This woman needs urgent help!”
Before he could finish speaking, the husband—on whom water had been poured repeatedly—suddenly regained consciousness and opened his eyes. There were no obvious injuries on his body, which made people realize he had been in a prolonged faint. They continued sprinkling water on him. He tried to speak, but couldn’t—his breathing was labored, as if struggling beyond his strength.
He watched helplessly as his wife was lifted into another car to save the life of the baby inside her, because at that moment, it was clear that her own life was slipping away. Her belly moved violently, as if the baby was about to burst out. He tried again to speak, tears filling his eyes as he stared at her moving belly, but no sound came.
Suddenly, as if jolted by a surge of strength, he turned his head away from the car, raised his hand weakly, and pointed behind them. With great effort, he opened his mouth and said, “My children…”
Before he could say more, blood poured from his mouth, his hand fell limp, and he collapsed. Some people quickly picked him up and rushed him into the same car his wife had been placed in, and the vehicle sped off. Meanwhile, others ran back to the wrecked car, trying to open the rear section. When they finally managed to pry it open, they saw nothing on the back seat. Only when they looked underneath the crushed vehicle did they spot the small children trapped beneath it.
The car had been completely mangled, leaving no space to pull them out easily. Panic spread among the people, as no one knew the fate of the children or the condition they were in under the wreckage.
