ABOUT THIS BOOK
Description
Ilyas at Government House
The huge dining table was filled with different kinds of food and drinks. Large greeting cards had been placed in every corner of the sitting room. Two people were seated at the dining table eating, and written on each greeting card was: “Welcome to Government House, ILYAS.”
Both of them looked up at her and smiled. It was Ilya and Governor Ma’arouf Habibu Ji-kas — Goggo’s Ilya. She met Ilya’s eyes, and they were filled with tears even as he smiled at the same time. It was obvious without asking that they were tears of joy. He was dressed in spotless white shadda, with an inner garment, flowing gown, and cap, clothes she had never seen him wear before. He looked so polished that he hardly seemed like the same Ilya.
She covered her mouth with her hand in amazement as she stared at them, extremely puzzled. Ameena’s father kept smiling as he looked at her. After making sure she had fully taken in the shock, he said calmly,
“Come closer now. It is Ilyas. Don’t you recognize him?”
Ilya, laughing and crying at once, said, “Dr. Amina!”
Amina set aside her surprise and pushed Ameena’s wheelchair toward them. She said, “Ilyan Goggo?”
He replied, “Yes, Amina. Because of your education — because of your education, today here I am in Ji-kas! I cannot describe to you how happy I am. Because of you, I have met the person I love most in my life…”
Then he burst into tears.
Amina came closer, gently pushing Ameena’s wheelchair. She sat on a soft chair beside Ilya, with little Ameena in her wheelchair in front of her.
She said, “But Ilya, honestly you people have nearly killed me with surprise. I never told him. I never once mentioned you to him…”
“Don’t exaggerate too much,” Ameena’s father said with a smile as he stood up, a sign that they had finished eating.
“Do you think I would agree to entrust my only daughter to someone whose background and family I did not fully know? There is nothing I do not know about you and all your people. He did not come because of you. He only stayed so you could greet each other, because I was told you had been looking for him before you came last week.”
He said this while wiping his hands and mouth with a tissue. Then he walked away without looking back at her, held little Ameena’s hand, kissed it, released it, and left.
Ilya Explains What Happened
Amina’s whole body trembled as she moved closer to Ilya.
“Ilya, how did this happen? Last week he told me to greet you. That is why I kept looking for you so I could tell you, and also ask you where you both met. I am confused. Was it you who gave him my account number?”
Ilya wiped his eyes, laughing.
“Wallahi, Amina, it was me. That commissioner — your teacher — came all the way to the house himself to ask for your account number, not through a messenger. Goggo told me to give it to him. Then he asked me if I was Ilya. I said yes, and he simply told me to follow him.
“At first Goggo became a little afraid, wondering whether I had done something wrong. I told her to calm down, since he was the one who had chosen you for the work in the first place. So he carried me in his car and did not stop anywhere until we reached the Governor’s office. And that was how I found myself face to face with Ji-qas.
“He shook my hand and gave me water to drink. The commissioner told him that I was your elder brother, though not of the same mother, and that you had told him how deeply I loved him even before you began this job, and how I persuaded you and Goggo to go and vote for him. He was very pleased, thanked me, and invited me to come today so we could eat lunch together. These clothes I am wearing — he sent them to me and said they were his own, and that I should wear them when coming…”
Amina said, “Goodness of Allah!”
He continued, “You are the reason for it all. He has also given me a job here in this house. I am now the head of the main kitchen.
“At first he asked me whether I had gone to school. I said no, except that I fought against ignorance. Never in my life have I regretted not staying in school for western education as much as I do today, Amina. He said that if I had been educated, he would have made me one of his advisers on youth affairs. Even so, he said he would not leave me just like that; he knows what will suit me.”
Amina laughed and said, “I can already picture Ilyan Goggo in an office.”
They both laughed. He said, “This one too is a serious office. Whatever is eaten in this house, I am the one who gives instructions to the cooks. The entire kitchen of the house is under my control. But honestly, it was hard for me to accept. If I leave Goggo, what will happen to her business, since I am her strength?”
Amina shook her head.
“Appoint one of your boys who works with you and understands the business properly. But you are a man, Ilya. You will have a family to build. You must stand on your own feet. Even Goggo would prefer that, rather than having you fail to establish yourself just because of her business.”
He stood up, adjusting the sleeve of his flowing gown.
“You have spoken wisely. Let me discuss it with Goggo first. I am leaving now.”
“Greet everyone at home for me — Goggo, Inna Zulai, Talatu, and all my little doves.”
“They will hear. Is this your daughter?” he asked, touching Ameena’s head.
“Yes, she is Ameena.”
“Allah sarki. The little girl looks so much like her father. May Allah grant you healing, Ameena.”
Little Ameena replied softly, “Amin.”
They exchanged farewells, and he left. Then she pushed Ameena back to the room.
Amina’s Growing Bond with Ma’arouf
So Amina continued working in Government House, and today it has been ten full months of caring for Ameena with all her ability and with the full depth of knowledge Allah had given her. She did not stop there. She kept researching the difficulties of paralysis, day and night, morning and evening, and she combined all of that with prayers, voluntary worship, and night vigils — all for the healing of Ameena Ma’arouf. And every day, little Ameena kept improving in health and strength.
Both her left and right hands were now moving. Only one leg still had not been granted the ability to walk. Amina had begun using two support rods for her, one on each side, helping her and teaching her how to walk with them.
Gradually, a strong familiarity continued to grow between Governor Ji-kas and Amina. With subtle skill, he kept drawing her closer and becoming involved in the details of her life. Character is one of the greatest things that makes a person lovable, and Amina had character — and good character at that, worthy of praise.
Every day, Ma’arouf Ji-kas kept observing Amina’s ways. One trait today, another tomorrow, all of them reminding him of A’isha. Slowly, a deep love began to build in his heart without even his own awareness — that kind of love that enters quietly and gently before its owner even realizes it.
