ABOUT THIS BOOK

Description

Chaos and Tragedy

From Zainab to her mother, no one could remain calm. The sight of Zainab’s father lying motionless struck terror in them all. His silence was enough proof—his life had ended.

The piercing scream that burst from Maman Zainab was enough to shake the whole house. The sound froze Zainab, forcing her to her feet. Yet her mother collapsed instantly, breath gone, body still—she had fainted.

Zainab jumped from the bed in panic. Blood continued to gush from her father’s wound like water from a broken pipe. The fall had forced the knife deeper into his stomach, worsening his condition. The scene was unbearable.

Unable to handle her parents’ plight, Zainab rushed out to look for her sister Khadija.

Maman Zainab in Custody

It took over three hours before Maman Zainab finally stirred from her fainting spell. When she awoke, she found herself not at home but in a police cell.

Her eyes were swollen, red, and heavy with tears. She tried to rise but her weak body failed her. Lying on a thin mat, pain gripped every bone.

Tears streamed as she noticed the iron bars and burglar-proofed door. Terror struck: Where were Khadija and Zainab’s father? Attempting again to stand, she realized her leg was chained. Fear deepened—what crime had brought her here?

Khadija’s Abduction

At home, Zainab wept alone. Khadija had gone to fetch help but never returned.

On her way out of the neighborhood, Khadija had found the streets empty—men were already at Jumu’ah prayer. Desperate, she headed for the main road. Suddenly, a shiny black Bugatti screeched to a halt in front of her.

Two tall, handsome men in ash-colored suits stepped out. They were clearly foreigners—pale-skinned, sharp-eyed, with an intimidating aura. Without a word, they grabbed Khadija and threw her into their tinted car. Her screams echoed, then silence. They drove away calmly, as if nothing had happened.

That was the last anyone saw of Khadija.

Zainab’s Desperate Search

Meanwhile, Zainab, in frantic grief, ran out like a madwoman searching for people. She collided with a motorcyclist, falling hard, scraping her hand on a stone. Ignoring the pain, she jumped up and kept running.

As she neared the main road, a police vehicle appeared. At its sight, she froze. Inside she spotted Hauwa, a woman she knew, riding with the officers. Fear gripped Zainab—she realized they were heading to her house.

The Police Raid

Six officers, led by Hauwa, stormed the house. They found Maman Zainab unconscious beside the bloodied body of her husband. With gloves, they photographed the corpse before moving him. Maman Zainab, still fainted, was carried into their vehicle.

Zainab begged them not to take her mother, but they ignored her cries. The officers also took Hauwa along for questioning.

The father’s body was taken to the hospital for examination. Evidence was quickly stacked against Maman Zainab. Fingerprints on the knife confirmed her contact. Hauwa testified she had killed her husband. The police locked her in a cell even before senior investigators arrived.

Accusations and Grief

At the station, the victim’s family gathered after Hauwa phoned them. His mother wailed bitterly, calling Maman Zainab a murderer who had stolen their only support. She swore she must pay with her life.

Even while Maman Zainab lay unconscious, they hurled insults at her. Some demanded her execution. Only Maman Hanif remained silent, tears her only expression. She knew of the deep love between the couple and doubted Maman Zainab could ever kill her husband. Suspicion filled her heart—she believed Hauwa had a hidden hand.

Return to the Family Home

The police later returned some relatives to the family house. At the gate, they met Zainab sobbing uncontrollably. She had lost her father, her mother had been taken, and Khadija was missing. Her world had collapsed.

The moment the policewoman escort left, Maman Haidar began hurling curses, vowing Maman Zainab would never be forgiven. “She must die as she killed our pillar,” she cried.

Division Among Relatives

While some relatives sided with Hauwa, others distrusted her completely. Maman Hanif especially despised her, convinced she was manipulating the family. Yet Hauwa enjoyed surprising support despite her arrogance.

The family was divided—some calling for justice against Maman Zainab, others quietly doubting her guilt.

Zainab’s Loneliness

Amid all the chaos, young Zainab sat broken at the threshold of her ruined home. Her tears flowed endlessly, with no one to comfort her. She had no father, no mother by her side, and her sister was gone without a trace.

Her small voice whispered only to God, as she struggled to understand why her world had fallen apart in a single day.
