Perched on the pristine white sofa adjacent to the guard's quarters, he lingered for over an hour, dabbing his brow with a handkerchief. Extracting a diminutive phone from his pocket, he noted the time: half-past five. Beside him, the guard, radio in hand, conversed until a horn sounded. Swiftly, the guard deposited his radio, stood, and strode to the gate, swinging it open for an incoming vehicle. The seated man tracked the car with his gaze as it navigated to the designated parking spot within the compound.
Upon the gate's closure, the guard reassured, "I'll inform him of your presence. Please, refrain from entering again," before departing towards the parking area. There, an elderly gentleman emerged from the car, adjusting his ample shirt. With respect, the guard greeted, "Welcome, Alhaji." Alhaji Ibrahim responded, "Ah, Aminu..." The guard relayed, "Alhaji, Habibu arrived earlier with a guest who has been awaiting you since two."
Locking his vehicle, Alhaji Ibrahim acknowledged, "I see. I shall speak with him." The waiting man rose and approached the parking space, greeting Alhaji Ibrahim with a respectful "Good evening, Alhaji." Inquiring about his identity, Alhaji Ibrahim learned the man's name was Ibrahim, a fellow townsman and son of his father's friend.
Alhaji Ibrahim inquired about his education, to which Ibrahim humbly admitted only completing high school. Lowering his gaze, he entrusted his fate to Alhaji's plans. Alhaji Ibrahim instructed him to return the following morning and excused himself to rest after his workday.
The man observed Alhaji Ibrahim's retreat into his duplex home, then turned to the guard's quarters. The guard, recognizing him, inquired about the meeting. Ibrahim shared Alhaji's directive to return in the morning. The guard comforted him, noting Alhaji's longstanding relationship with Habibu and the familial treatment extended to those associated with him.
Inside, Alhaji Ibrahim sat in his parlor with his wife, Hajiya Maryam, and two girls on the carpet. After a brief exchange, he dismissed the girls, who apologized and exited, discussing the day's events and their gratitude for the family's understanding.
