Morning at Home
“Suhaila, every day I have to come and wake you up. You still don’t have the habit of waking up by yourself, do you?” Ummi said as she entered the room.
Slowly, Suhaila began to open her eyes, stretching while saying a waking prayer. “Ummi, I’m awake,” she said in a soft, sleepy tone as she fully opened her eyes.
Mama said, “If you like, you can even go back to sleep till 7:30. You’re sleeping without any intention of waking up, not to talk of getting ready for school. Get up and prepare yourself; food is in the dining room.” She walked out, muttering to herself.
Suhaila quickly got up and went into the toilet because she was already very late. In no time, she finished getting ready. She only drank tea, took a small bite of chips, and then left, saying, “Ummi, I’m off. I’ll be back.”
Mama prayed for her, “May Allah grant you success and bring you back safely.”
As she arrived at school, she saw their Physics teacher almost entering the class—and he was the one taking them for the first period. She hurriedly rushed ahead of him and entered the class. As she walked in, her best friend smiled at her.
“Good morning, Nafisat,” Suhaila said.
“Good morning, early bird,” Nafisat replied, laughing.
They started chatting quietly, but soon stopped as their teacher entered the class.
Break Time Conversations
When it was break time, everyone slowly began leaving the class. Suhaila and her friends didn’t step out immediately, but later they stood up and headed toward the cafeteria, chatting and laughing as they walked.
A girl from their class called Suhaila’s name. She turned and replied.
“When school closes, we have a meeting about Uncle Nura’s group assignment,” the girl said.
“Alright then,” Suhaila replied.
Nafisat held her hand and they continued walking into the cafeteria. Nafisat then said, “That girl doesn’t even deserve to be close to you at all. She’s so arrogant, as if she owns the hostel we live in.”
Another girl added, “Honestly, she stopped Suhaila from mixing with anyone except herself. I know Suhaila is kind—before Nafisat came, we used to be together and there was no problem. But since that girl came, she won’t let Suhaila relate with anyone.”
They continued complaining and grumbling about her.
After school, they stood together and discussed the group assignment, with everyone contributing their points. Even though Suhaila’s driver had already arrived and was waiting, she waited until they finished before leaving.
An Unexpected Call
She ran into the sitting room excitedly, shouting, “Ummiii, I’m back!”
“Look at her coming in to burst my ears with shouting,” Ummi said.
Someone asked that the phone be handed to her. Ummi passed the phone to Suhaila. She looked at the screen, saw the name displayed, and quickly put it to her ear.
“Sweet bro,” she said eagerly.
“Surprise,” he replied.
She smiled and said, “I’m listening.”
“Tomorrow at this time, I’ll be with my beautiful sister.”
She jumped excitedly, filled with joy.
