ABOUT THIS BOOK

Description

"Kurfi! Kurfi!!"
That was the chant echoing from the other students as they cheered on the young girl, who was currently driving toward the basket. Even the teachers had their eyes completely glued to her; her sheer skill on the court was a marvel to most of them. Thanks to this talent, she had made a name for herself, becoming one of the most prominent and celebrated students in the school.
Before anyone could even blink, she executed a massive leap and sunk the ball into the net, effortlessly weaving past several of her opponents. Right at that exact moment, the referee blew the final whistle. The crowd of students erupted into wild cheers. Meanwhile, those supporting the opposing team slumped their shoulders, utterly dejected. Kurfi's teammates rushed her, engulfing her in a massive group hug of celebration until they all tumbled to the ground together.
It took quite an effort before they finally let her go. She stood up, dusting herself off while catching her breath heavily.
They were presented with the trophy, and the school proprietor himself gave Kurfi a special prize for her outstanding performance. If nothing else, they had defended their home court and saved themselves from a humiliating defeat on their own turf, which would have been deeply embarrassing.
At exactly four o'clock, school closed for the day. By then, she had already changed back into her school uniform: ash-colored trousers and a white top with slits down the sides, paired with a small hijab that barely covered her chest.
Her sister, Zeenat Kurfi, looked at her with a laugh. "You should have just gone home in your sports gear like that."
Kurfi's eyes widened. "What, am I crazy? No way! I’m not ready to face interrogation from our parents. God forbid any of them sees me in those skimpy basketball shorts. I wouldn't have a problem with my Abba, but Baba Mudassir and Yaya Khalid? Heaven forbid!"
They both burst into laughter.
"It wouldn’t just be you either; I’d get slaughtered at home too, I swear," Zeenat added.
Kurfi smirked as she zipped her bag after stuffing the plastic bag containing her sports gear inside. "Exactly! The only thing Baba Mudassir and the rest haven't done to us over this game is physically beat us, and you know it."
Zeenat smiled, and with that, they walked out to the school courtyard to wait for their ride. To their surprise when they stepped outside, they spotted Bala, their father’s driver. They approached him, and Kurfi was the first to ask.
"Are you with Abba?"
He replied warmly, "No, but we’re going to pick him up right now."
Once they got into the car, Zeenat asked another question. "Then where is Yakubu?"
"His car broke down, and he’s currently with Jawad and the others. But he has left it with the mechanic now, and they took a commercial vehicle. That’s why Alhaji instructed me to just come and pick you both up."
After that, the girls fell silent. Kurfi plugged in her earpiece to listen to music on her phone, while Zeenat amused herself by looking out the window at the passing streets.
A few minutes later, they arrived at Bompai, where their parents' company was located. The security guard quickly opened the gate upon recognizing the vehicle, and they drove inside.
Once the car parked, they got out and headed into the building.
Everywhere they passed, eyes followed them. Some staff members even greeted them respectfully, recognizing the unmistakable resemblance to the Kurfi family line. Even without being told, everyone knew they carried their boss's blood.
Kurfi walked at a leisurely, almost reluctant pace, whereas Zeenat had already hurried ahead and reached the door leading to their father’s office.
"Excuse me, Ma."
Hearing the secretary's voice, Kurfi turned toward her. They exchanged polite greetings, and the secretary informed her that the boss was currently in the meeting room. Zeenat replied that it was no problem and that they would wait. She then opened the office door and went inside.
However, Kurfi, driven by her usual nosiness, turned back to the secretary and asked where the meeting room was. The woman pointed it out without hesitation but added that she wouldn't be allowed in until the meeting was over. Kurfi shot her a glare, gave a short, dismissive hiss, and ignored her, walking right past. Zeenat, who had already gone inside the office, rushed back out looking panicked and called out to her, but Kurfi didn’t even turn around, let alone think of stopping.
Just as she reached for the door and was about to knock, she felt her hand grabbed. She turned around, intending to scream from the sheer pain of the grip, but a hand was instantly slapped over her mouth to silence her. The sight of the person standing before her made her feel as though she might wet her pants on the spot. Her body began to tremble instantly. How on earth had he even arrived in town? His face was set in its usual stern expression. She couldn't utter a single word to him, her lips trembling uncontrollably.
He dragged her along until they were back inside Abba’s office. He shut the door behind them and looked at her furiously.
"What kind of shameless girl are you? You were explicitly told they are in a meeting, yet you still insisted on barging in? I should have just let you go in, let you embarrass yourself, and then broken you in half afterward! Simply stupid! Find a place to sit down before I lose my temper and lay a hand on you."
Before he could even finish his sentence, she quickly dropped her backside onto the seat next to Zeenat, who was also sitting completely silent, nervously fidgeting with her fingers.
