ABOUT THIS BOOK
Description
Aeeshaa was sitting on a single-seater chair with a knife and a bowl, slicing okra. She worked rapidly like a machine without resting, with prayer being the only thing that could make her pause this chore.
She quickly got up and went back to the kitchen, fetched a mortar and pestle, and pounded the okra she had sliced. As soon as she finished, she added it to a soup pot already rich with meat and fish, stirred it, and covered it briefly. Then, she returned to the semovita swallow she had stirred five minutes prior. Giving it a final stir to check if it was ready, she quickly grabbed plastic wraps and a serving container, ladling the swallow and twisting the wraps before placing them where they belonged. Hearing the soup behind her start to boil over, she quickly turned off the gas, covered the pot completely, and finished scooping out the remaining swallow.
When she finished, she checked the fridge and saw that the zobo drink she had prepared was cold, breaking into a smile. She swiftly went back to wash everything that needed washing and set the food on the dining table. Once everything was ready, she turned quickly to go to her room, shower, and get ready for Islamic school so she wouldn't be late like she was this morning for secular school. Just then, she heard her stepmother calling her, and her heart beat violently.
"Yes, Umma, I'm coming!"
With haste, she headed to her stepmother's room, stopping at the doorway to knock and offer greetings. Silence followed before she was finally answered with a shout:
"Damn you! When will you ever learn to just walk in when I call you? Why do you stand there out of sheer spite, waiting for me to give you permission to enter? You act just like an old woman! If I didn't want to see you, would I have called you?"
Aeeshaa entered, stood off to the side, and said, "Umma, I'm sorry. Here I am."
"Good. Have you finished making the food?"
"Yes, I've finished and set everything on the dining table. Now I'm going to get ready for Islamic school so I'm not late. You know I couldn't go to secular school today because I was late. I've prepared everything, including dinner, since it's swallow."
"Who asked you to make dinner too? Did I tell you to cook dinner, or are you just showing off? Or do you think you know better than I do about what should be done?"
"Umma, please forgive me. I don't want to upset you. When I return from Islamic school, I'll cook whatever you want. Please, even if I miss secular school, I don't want to miss Islamic school."
"Oh, look at Alhuda Huda, the scholar! Get out of here and go. When you come back, there's laundry to do—yours and your younger siblings'. You can include your uniforms in the wash too, right?"
"Yes, that's fine, Umma. I'm leaving now; see you when I return."
