Ameen’s Return
Since Prince Ameen returned from Canada, Hajiya Jameela’s peace of mind vanished. She loathed him, wishing she could ruin his chances of taking the throne. Her heart raced when she heard he had entered Abbi’s quarters. She quickly sat down on the sofa to avoid suspicion, pretending everything was normal.
Moments later, she heard the guard’s voice announcing the Prince’s departure. He greeted her stiffly and walked out without waiting for her reply. He entered his car, and with a wave of his hand, ordered them to the royal palace. On the way, he remained silent, scrolling through his phone, his face composed.
At the Royal Palace
On arrival, Prince Ameen headed straight to his mother’s section. “Barka da hutawa Umma,” he greeted. She smiled, touched to see her son after ten long years abroad. “You didn’t even wait to greet me this morning,” she said.
“I went to see Abbi,” Ameen explained. “I wanted to speak to him before he left.”
They chatted briefly. His younger sister Juhaina joined in, warmly greeting her brother. She expressed concern about his travel to visit his friend Fahad the next day, but Ameen assured her all would be well.
After some time, Ameen excused himself, saying he would visit Mai Martaba, and then head to see Momy and Mama.
Visiting Fahad
The next day, Ameen traveled to Fahad’s home. It had been ten years since his last visit, and he had forgotten the location. He stood by his sleek black Escape, frustration on his face, trying to reach Fahad by phone. After several attempts, Fahad finally answered. “You’re in Nigeria? When did you arrive?” he asked excitedly.
“I’m near the hospital in your area but lost,” Ameen explained. Fahad said he’d send someone to pick him up, as he was at the airport collecting his parents.
Su’ad’s Entry
Su’ad was preparing for her father’s return from Cairo. While finishing her makeup, her mother handed her the phone—it had been ringing nonstop. Fahad had called, asking her to pick up his friend waiting by the roadside.
Su’ad, dressed in a thick coat and baby hijab due to the chilly weather, headed out. She walked with her usual graceful gait, unaware of the impact she had on onlookers.
She reached the meeting spot, finding no one. Just as she called Fahad to inform him, a luxurious black car pulled up. Ameen stepped out, looking like a prince from a fairytale—tall, fair, with sharp features and an air of royalty. He asked, “Are you Su’ad?”
“Yes, I am,” she replied shyly.
“Well, you wasted my time,” he snapped, opening the door and gesturing for her to enter. His rude tone left her stunned.
Before she could respond, a convoy of police vehicles pulled up. One of the officers stepped out and greeted her. It was Yah Mukhutar, her older cousin. He asked why she was waiting there. She explained she was helping Fahad’s friend. Mukhutar confirmed Ameen’s identity, and Su’ad was asked to enter the other vehicle.
At Home
Back home, her father and mother returned from Cairo. Su’ad greeted her father with excitement, while her mother scolded her playfully for clinging to him.
Fahad and Ameen arrived soon after. The warm greeting between them showed how close they were. When Su’ad brought food to their room later, Ameen stared at her, visibly impressed. “This is Su’ad?” he asked Fahad.
“She’s all grown up, right?” Fahad replied.
Su’ad, annoyed by the comment, left without saying much. Despite their brief interaction, something about Ameen stirred her heart. Though she tried to ignore it, his image lingered in her thoughts.
Blooming Feelings
Though they didn't speak again for two days, Su’ad kept thinking about Ameen. She’d find excuses to visit Fahad’s quarters, hoping to catch a glimpse of him.
Eventually, she confided in her mother. “Mami, this guest of Uncle Fahad—where is he from?” Her mother explained he was Fahad’s childhood friend, now working in Canada, and was only visiting.
Su’ad later dressed up for an evening lecture. She was fond of long, modest gowns, a preference shared by Fahad who always said they suited her best. She left home smelling of soft perfume, unaware that Ameen would see her again.
She passed Ameen and Fahad in the living room. Ameen’s gaze followed her, full of admiration. After dropping her off at school, Fahad couldn’t help teasing her, saying she looked stunning.
Later, her friend Ameera teased her too. “You and Uncle Fahad look more like lovers than relatives,” she said. Su’ad just smiled, keeping her real feelings hidden.
A Confession
After lectures, Su’ad returned home and entered a car, assuming it was Fahad picking her up. She started speaking without looking. “Uncle, you came quickly,” she said, rummaging through her bag. Only when the car started moving did she glance up and freeze—it was Ameen, not Fahad.
He parked the car a few minutes later. Placing his head on the steering wheel, he spoke softly. “You don’t greet people. You just leave them longing.” He looked up at her. “Do you know how I feel? Every heartbeat echoes your name. Su’ad, I love you.”
She stared at him, stunned. Did Fahad’s friend just confess his love for her?
