A Calm Morning Turned Heavy
 
Rufaida quietly approached the sitting room where her husband, Wahid, sat with their son, Yasir, on his lap. She smiled as she stood behind him, prompting Wahid to tease her about being in the mood for jokes. She accused him of ignoring her all morning in favor of Yasir. Wahid reassured her, asking her to sit, and they began chatting.
 
Yasir then complained that Wahid was going to Zaria without him. Wahid, trying to downplay it, said it was just a quick trip to answer his mother's call and that he would return the same day. Rufaida felt uneasy but masked it, though deep down she knew the call wasn't new. She was aware that Wahid's mother wanted him to marry another woman—Ruqayya—a match neither Wahid nor Rufaida supported.
 
Departure and Domestic Life
 
Wahid left for Zaria after dropping Rufaida and Yasir at their friend Luba’s house. Rufaida reminded him about their scheduled visit to Luba, which he had forgotten. He left with final goodbyes, promising to greet everyone in Zaria. Yasir cried after Wahid left, prompting Rufaida to comfort him.
 
Inside, Luba and Rufaida chatted about cooking and life. As they moved to the kitchen, Rufaida suddenly felt her heartbeat rise—uneasy and unsettled. She stepped out, called Wahid’s number multiple times, but it wasn’t going through. Then she finally reached someone who answered Wahid’s phone—but it wasn’t Wahid.
 
The Shocking Call
 
A police officer answered Wahid’s phone. Rufaida introduced herself as Wahid’s wife. The officer couldn’t bring himself to tell her what had happened and cut the call. This reaction increased Rufaida’s panic. She told Luba, and Luba called her husband Kabir, who was just returning home.
 
Kabir, unaware of the situation, entered and found Rufaida with tears in her eyes. Luba explained the matter. Kabir attempted to call Wahid’s number and was the next to hear from the police. The officer informed him of an accident involving Wahid and instructed them to come to General Hospital Zaria.
 
The Accident
 
Earlier that day, while driving to Zaria, Wahid's car had collided with another. His vehicle rolled off the road and caught fire. Passersby and the police managed to pull him from the wreckage, barely alive and severely injured. He was rushed to the emergency unit of the hospital. Attempts to reach his family through other contacts failed, so the police eventually picked the number saved as "My Wife"—which led to Rufaida.
 
The Family Is Informed
 
In Zaria, Abba, Wahid’s father, returned from a meeting and noticed multiple missed calls on his phone. He immediately called back and was given the grim news. Stunned, he didn't speak to anyone in the house and left immediately. Wahid’s younger brother, Abdulmalik, accompanied him to the hospital.
 
Hajiya Jamila, Wahid’s mother, panicked and rushed after them with other family members. Upon seeing Wahid in the hospital bed—barely recognizable, covered in blood, and barely conscious—everyone broke down in tears.
 
Abba, trying to stay strong, held Wahid’s hand and asked him to recite the Shahada. Wahid weakly tried to speak. His last audible word was "Rufaida." After that, he stopped responding. Abba kept whispering prayers, but shortly after, Wahid passed away.
Collapse and Grief
 
The moment his death was confirmed, Hajiya Jamila fainted and had to be revived with water. Abdulmalik clung to his brother's lifeless body in tears. He had always admired Wahid, who was known for his calm nature and patience. The hospital handed over the body for burial preparation.
 
Reflection
 
Wahid's sudden death left a deep scar. Rufaida, unaware of the final moment, was still preparing for a trip to meet him, thinking maybe this was an elaborate April Fool’s prank—something Wahid had never done before.
 
This time, it wasn’t a joke.
