Indo’s Plea to Goggo
She was crying uncontrollably, wiping tears from her face as she watched the condition her grandmother was in. She pulled the edge of her hijab and used it to wipe her tears, then said,
“Please, Goggo, don’t die and leave me. I swear I’ll die too. You know there’s no one in this world who loves me except you—everyone hates me. If you die, how do you expect me to live my life? Please, Goggo, get up, don’t go.”
Goggo, who was lying down, felt deep pity for Indo. She herself began to shed tears. In a weak, strained voice, she started to speak,
“Indo, my time has come to an end. This is how Allah has destined it for us. You know every living soul will die. I’m leaving you in the hands of Allah, and in the care of Huwaila and the village head. Indo, everyone you see is living the life Allah has designed for them. And those you think hate you actually love you. It’s your love that blinded me so much that I never blamed you, even though you yourself know that some of the things you do are not right.”
Goggo’s Final Instructions
A coughing fit seized her; she coughed for a long time before it finally subsided. Indo quickly brought water, gently lifted Goggo’s head, helped her drink, then placed her back on the pillow.
Goggo turned to look at Indo and continued,
“Indo, I’m leaving you with advice: be patient and fear Allah. Do not covet what belongs to others. Protect your dignity. Please, Indo, guard your honor. Avoid provoking people and carrying tales.”
Indo’s body went cold as she replied,
“Goggo, are you really going to die and leave me? I swear I don’t want to hear you say that.”
Forcing a brave smile, Goggo said,
“That’s Goggo for you. Now go and open the storage room downstairs. There’s a bundle there—bring it to me, I’ll explain it to you.”
Weakly, Indo stood up and searched where Goggo directed her. Beneath the clothes, she found a bundle tied inside a small cloth. She picked it up, brought it to Goggo, and placed it before her.
“Untie it,” Goggo said. Without hesitation, Indo loosened it and found a folded letter wrapped together with two photographs, two silver rings, a men’s wristwatch that looked expensive, and a yellow baby towel. Goggo stared at the items carefully, wiping her tears, then said,
“Indo, keep these safely with you. One day they will be useful to you. They seem to be proofs and evidence—but Allah alone knows everything.”
Indo was completely confused and didn’t understand what Goggo meant by those items. Still, she packed them carefully among her belongings, just as Goggo instructed.
Delivering the Urgent Message
As Indo was about to sit, Goggo said to her,
“Go to Huwaila’s house and tell her to come. Then go to the village head and tell him my condition has worsened—I need to speak to him urgently.”
Indo rushed out hurriedly like someone ill, heading straight to Baba Huwaila’s house. With greetings on her lips, she entered the compound. Jamilu, who was washing dishes near the drainage, lifted his head in surprise and stared at her, saying,
“Indo Sarƙa, what’s this new act today? You’re greeting now? I hope you’re not planning some disaster for us.”
Without any cheer on her face, Indo replied,
“Jamilu, I didn’t come with trouble today. Is Baba Huwaila inside?”
Baba Huwaila lifted the curtain and said,
“Oh Sarƙa, is it Goggo’s condition?”
In a low voice, Indo answered,
“By Allah, Goggo’s condition has worsened. She said I should call you and the village head.”
Baba Huwaila uttered a prayer and quickly grabbed her scarf from where it was hanging. Indo turned and headed straight to the village head’s house.
On the way, Hanne blocked her path, saying,
“A thousand days for a thief, one day for the owner. Sarƙa, the other day whose food bundle did you pour sand into at Dan Bala the Miller’s place?”
She finished speaking while grabbing Indo’s hijab roughly. With great force, Indo freed herself and said,
“You know Goggo is sick. I won’t fight until she recovers. But I swear, write this down and keep it—you won’t choke me for nothing. It’s a debt you took.”
With that, she shoved Hanne aside and continued on her way.
