A Reunion After Years Apart
She felt as though she were dreaming—today she stood before Aji, watching him as he watched her. Today she was finally seeing him, the distance between them no more than two steps. Today she breathed in, feeling the warmth of Mansoor’s breath mingling with her own. Joy overwhelmed her and made her cry; it had been about ten years since she had last seen him like this. Before now she had only seen him in pictures. He had once said that since she was far from seeing him, he too would stay far from hearing or seeing her forever. Yet happiness filled her heart so much that she couldn’t hold herself together, and tears streamed down her beautifully made-up face.
He, on the other hand, wished he could stop himself from looking at her, but his eyes refused to cooperate, as if they had been glued to her. Jealousy and a strange bitterness surged within him. The love he had buried deep inside tried to rise again, but he struggled to keep it hidden. His chest burned; the air around him felt tight as he sensed the heat of his anger escaping through his throat and mouth. The veins in his head throbbed, his chest rising and falling rapidly—clear signs that his anger and inner turmoil had reached their peak. His mouth felt heavy, unable to form words. In his effort to leave quickly, he tried to move his feet away before the secrets locked in his heart could reveal themselves.
A Painful Confrontation
As he tried to walk past her, brushing by her side, he heard her voice—sweet and familiar, the very voice that had always calmed him. Once, hearing it used to bring him boundless happiness, but now it pierced his heart like a blade. Seeing her filled him with sorrow, and he avoided looking at her as though doing so meant death.
“Aji Nah…”
She called again, her voice trembling, but he acted as if he hadn’t heard and quickened his steps. With sudden determination, she grabbed the edge of his sleeve, unwilling to let him escape her sight. The way she held him forced him to stop. His gaze fell on her henna-decorated hands gripping his left sleeve, then moved up to her face. The look he gave her made her release him, fresh tears flooding her eyes. As soon as she let go, he strode away swiftly like a warrior on a battlefield, feeling that if he stayed near her any longer, something terrible might happen.
Mu’azzam and the others stood watching in stunned silence, arms folded across their chests, unable to intervene. Even Rukkaya, standing nearby, was too shocked to move. Two questions echoed in her mind:
Where did Mimi know this harsh-looking stranger from?
Why was she crying just from seeing him?
Another thought crept in: Could it be… is he the one?
Mimi gathered her clothes and stepped in front of Aji again, this time blocking his path firmly with both hands.
“You will not leave this place until you speak to me. It’s me—your Mimi, Mansoor,” she said, her voice on the verge of breaking.
Your Mimi? The words only angered him more. He glared at her and snapped harshly, “Do I know you? Do you know me?” pointing at himself.
Her body trembled. “It’s me… don’t you recognize me?”
“I’m not talking about recognition,” he said coldly. “I don’t know you, and I’ve never seen you. Don’t ever approach me again or claim you know me. Otherwise, I’ll make your life miserable. Do I look like a foolish man who deals with silly women like you? My parents are poor—we’re just managing to survive where God has placed us. We won’t step into what’s beyond us.”
He finished speaking, pointing at her with his thumb just as Rukkaya and the others rushed closer. Mimi broke down in tears.
“If not for our love, at least for the bond we once shared, stay and greet me with basic humanity, Aji,” she pleaded.
A Breaking Point
As if she had thrown hot water on him, he shoved her hand aside roughly. She stumbled and fell, but he didn’t turn back. Raising his voice, he said, “There is no humanity left between us, Fatima Kabir Sulaiman Dabo—none at all. Don’t deceive yourself.”
He stepped on the hem of her dress as he moved to leave. As she tried to stand, there was a ripping sound—her dress tore at the waist where it was laced with net fabric, exposing part of her stomach.
Hearing the tear, he glanced back and saw her exposed midsection. A surge of jealous rage flared within him. How many men are here? What if they look at her? The thought felt unbearable.
Mimi sobbed weakly, pleading, “Please… please, Mansoor.”
Rukkaya rushed to her side, furious. “Mimi, what is this? How can you let someone unworthy humiliate you like this?” she said angrily.
He heard her words and had already started walking toward Mu’azzam’s car when he suddenly turned back, burning with anger. Rukkaya and Bibi’s friend helped Mimi to her feet, but her body was still partially exposed. His eyes shut tightly as if he might explode. Overwhelmed by jealousy, he didn’t even realize when he shouted at her.
