Bahar Is Helped to Bathe and Prepare
Clean, warm, and pleasantly scented bath water was prepared for her. Maa Sakinah personally helped her all the way to the toilet entrance, then left the bathroom and turned to Salmah, asking her to assist Bahar in undressing and to show her everything she needed.
Salmah went inside and carefully guided her through everything. She showed her the expensive, beautifully scented soap she was to use for bathing, then went to bring her two fairly large towels before leaving again to go and prepare the food Maa had instructed her to make for her.
Although Bahar had not grown up in this kind of luxury, she was not foolish or clueless, so she quietly took her bath and came out after performing ablution. She wrapped one towel around her body and used the other to cover her hair, which was still loose and slightly wet.
As she approached, Maa Sakinah stood up, took her gently, and seated her before a mirror. She began drying her skin with the towel in a careful and tender manner. Then, speaking softly and calmly, she said:
“Bahar, my Bahar, be patient and place your trust in Allah, and accept His decree however it comes to you. You are not the only one who has lost your father. We too have lost a part of ourselves with his passing in this world. We loved him more than ourselves, but Allah did not will for us to continue living with him, so He separated us from him at the very moment we had hoped we would see him again.
Prayer and patience are the only things you can now offer your parents. Do not forget that the patience and endurance you show will give you the strength and peace of mind to keep praying for them and asking Allah to have mercy on them at all times. So for now, soften your heart. Do not let grief settle in you so deeply that it prevents you from constantly sending them your prayers.
Here among us, you know you will live a life of care and love, because we love you deeply. Put it in your heart that you are the light of our lives and the delight of our eyes. Even if you do not yet see that from everyone now, you will see it from me before your father’s relatives come to know you and truly understand who you are.
You are my trust, and I will give you every kind of love, protection, strength, and even my life. You are the light of my eyes and my heart. Bahar, let me love you as though I had carried and given birth to you myself, if only you will ease your heart. I do not want to see you in this condition.”
When she finished speaking, she continued wiping Bahar’s strikingly beautiful face—so captivating because she had never been exposed to the sun, having been born, raised, and grown up in the darkness of the GHAZ palace. Then Maa took some Neutrogena body oil and gently rubbed it onto her body with tenderness and care.
After applying the oil, she held her hair and dried it while it was still damp, then lightly tied it back with a band.
A Simple Change of Clothes and Quiet Worship
There were no proper clothes she could lend Bahar to wear, because their clothes would not fit her—they were too large, while she was a slim young girl. And besides, she did not have the authority to give her other clothes to wear, except the kind worn by those without rank in the palace. So she simply gave her a long gown to put on for the time being. After Bahar dressed, she stood up and began to pray, while Maa went into the toilet herself to bathe and perform her own prayer.
Bahar began making up the prayers she had missed, offering them one after another quietly until she finished. Then she raised her hands to begin supplication.
Bahar Breaks Down in Grief
But the moment she was about to pray, a powerful cry broke out from within her heart. A terrible pain pierced through her, and she could not hold it back. She buried her face in her palms and began to shake violently as her weeping grew more intense, because she had finally accepted that she had truly lost her father—the only one she had left.
She had lost her Abaa, and now only the Hereafter remained.
She had lost her life.
She had lost her light.
She had lost her hope and the strength he alone gave her, all in a single night.
Abaa had gone and left her in a world where she knew no one and understood nothing without him, and now she had found herself in a place where she felt she could not survive.
She cried bitterly, a heartbreaking cry that could stir the soul and raise goosebumps. Her chest ached with such intensity that it felt as though her whole body could no longer bear the pain.
Maa, who was in the toilet, heard her and fell silent, her own body weakened by the depth of her pity. She felt as though she wished she could take Bahar’s sorrow out of her heart and place it upon herself instead, just so the girl might finally have some relief and peace of mind she had never known.
Even after Maa had finished everything, she could not bring herself to come out immediately, wanting to give Bahar the chance to release the grief and pain that had been buried in her heart since the previous day when her father left this world.
Only after many long minutes did Maa come out, her own eyes red as well. She sat down and composed herself, and when she was done, she came to Bahar’s side and gently helped her rise from her prayer mat.
