Around two o'clock in the morning in the city of Maiduguri, armed robbers—their faces concealed behind masks—broke into a sprawling luxury mansion. They shot an elderly security guard standing by the gate using a silenced gun, ensuring no one nearby could hear the gunfire. About ten of them made their way inside the main house.

Once inside, they split into two groups to cover the massive compound, moving from room to room. They rounded up all the occupants and gathered them in the downstairs living room: the head of the house, Alhaji, his wife, and their two daughters. His wife and daughters were all crying, while Alhaji was shaking uncontrollably, entirely overcome with panic.

A robber with a husky voice spoke up, saying, "Alhaji, hand over all your property documents, or I will kill you and your children right here."

Alhaji, already terrified, pleaded without hesitation, "Let me go upstairs and get them, please just don't kill my children. They mean everything to me, they are my life."

The young robber replied, "I am a man of my word. Believe me, if you bring them and sign the documents, I assure you that you will all be set free. Let's go."

Together with Alhaji, they retrieved the papers from upstairs and returned downstairs. Alhaji signed every single document, handing over the deeds to his houses, plots of land, company, and cars.

The young man remarked, "Good man, so you do have some sense after all." Turning to the one they addressed as Boss, he said, "Boss, I am done. Let's move out."

The Boss burst into laughter and said, "ISSAM, even if you are done with your job, I am not done with mine." He pulled out his gun and shot Alhaji directly in the heart.

The one named Issam was stunned. He instantly yanked off his mask, utter shock written across his face. With a trembling voice, he stammered, "Boss, this wasn't the deal! We didn't agree on killing him! I brought you to his house because I had unfinished business with him, not to murder him. This goes beyond our agreement!"

Hearing Issam say I brought you to his house, Alhaji's eldest daughter raised her eyes to see who had led the robbers to her family home. She stumbled backward, completely paralyzed by shock. She couldn't even weep; her heart pounded so violently against her chest it felt as though it would burst out.
