ABOUT THIS BOOK
Description
Two years later. Hauwa now had two children: Khalil and my namesake—since the day she was born, her father whispered the name Amina during her call to prayer, so we all call her Minal. By this time, Hassana and Husaina had grown quite active, walking everywhere on their own two feet.
I had gotten pregnant again, but I lost it due to an extremely severe, burning fever when the pregnancy was no more than six weeks along. Yet, by God's grace, just a month after the miscarriage, I conceived again while staying with him in Lagos. He immediately insisted that I return to Abuja so Hauwa could take my place.
When I asked him why, he simply said that Baby Nana had passed away in that house, and it was also in that same house where I suffered the severe illness that led to my miscarriage, so his mind couldn't be at ease. The explanation almost made me laugh, but I held it in to avoid turning it into a fight. Still, I reflected on his reasoning, feeling that it bordered on a lack of faith in divine decree. As for Baby Nana, there was a clear underlying cause behind her death. And as for my lost pregnancy, neither he nor I could ever pinpoint an exact human cause—it was simply the will of God. Besides, it was in that very same house that I carried Hassana and Husaina to term, and we had only been back in Abuja for four months. I wondered how Hauwa would take the news, especially since we had finally reached a place of mutual understanding. He assured me he would explain his reasoning to her himself.
Hearing that, I told him it made no sense to act that way—as if she weren't human too. If he truly suspected his house was the problem, he should just move altogether. Saying a house was unsafe the moment I got pregnant was nothing short of inviting unnecessary drama and conflict. He countered by saying that if she were to get pregnant as well, she could simply return too.
Seeing that he refused to understand my point, I dropped the matter. Beyond his nature, age was beginning to creep up on him, and I didn't want him getting unnecessarily worked up over us.
As luck would have it, Hauwa didn't make a fuss. Five days after our return to Abuja, she left with him. Khalil had already been out of her care for a while, so she only traveled with Minal, as the baby was still breastfeeding.
