ABOUT THIS BOOK
Description
Hauwa has two children: Khalil and my namesake—since the day she gave birth, her husband named the baby Amina, so we call her Minal. At that time, Hassana and Husaina had grown quite active and were walking everywhere on their own two feet. I became pregnant again, but I lost it due to a severe, intense fever when the pregnancy was no more than six weeks along. By God's grace, just a month after losing that pregnancy, I conceived again while staying with him in Lagos.
He then insisted that I return to Abuja so Hauwa could come to Lagos. When I asked him why, he claimed that Baby Nana had passed away in that house, and that it was also where I suffered the severe illness that led to my miscarriage, so he did not feel at ease leaving me there. His reasoning almost made me laugh, but I held it in to avoid turning it into a fight. However, I kept reflecting on his mindset, feeling it showed a lack of faith (tauhid). As for Baby Nana, we knew what caused her death. And as for the pregnancy I lost, neither he nor I could claim to know the exact cause—it was simply the will of God. Besides, that was the very same house where I carried Hassana and Husaina to term. On top of that, we had only been there for four months. How would Hauwa interpret this swap, especially now that we were finally getting along and understanding each other?
He assured me he would explain his reasons to her himself. Hearing that, I told him it made no sense to do such a thing—was she not a human being too? If he suspected his house had an issue, he should just move elsewhere altogether. Sending me away and bringing her in just because I lost a pregnancy there would only cause unnecessary drama and conflict. He replied that if she were to get pregnant as well, she would return to Abuja too. Seeing that he refused to understand my point, I dropped the matter. After all, apart from his temperament, he was getting older, and I didn't want him getting worked up over it.
As luck would have it, Hauwa did not argue. Five days after we returned to Abuja, she left with him for Lagos. Khalil had already been away from her care for a while, so she only went with Minal, as the baby was still breastfeeding.
