A Sudden Marriage and Rising Tensions
Auntie widened her eyes in shock and said,
“It’s been done already, Daddy?”
“Yes, it has been done now, by the will of Allah, Fadimatu.
Bappa Salihu insisted that it be done immediately. He said delay would be irresponsible, especially given the situation we’re in.”
With unease in her voice, Auntie replied,
“Daddy, I’m just afraid of what this might bring.”
Daddy cut her short.
“Pray for good. Allah will take control.
For now, I want you to go and call Feeryal for me.”
Auntie rose weakly and went to Feeryal’s room, only to find her asleep. She returned and informed Daddy, who said she should be left to wake on her own.
The young men of the house soon emerged from the mosque, their faces heavy with confusion.
The wedding had come as a complete shock to everyone—even Daddy himself had not expected Bappa Salihu to order that the marriage be conducted immediately.
Zaraddin hurried after his father in agitation.
“So you stayed silent while they married off the girl I love? I swear I won’t accept this! Everyone knows I loved her, but because he has money, she’s given to him? This is hypocrisy! I won’t accept it unless this marriage is reversed and given to me!”
His father glared at him.
“You useless fool, get out of my way! You don’t know what you’re doing. People are working for your own good and you don’t see it. What concern is it of yours who she’s married to? Don’t let me hear another word from you—or you’ll regret it. Nonsense!”
Zaraddin stepped aside as his father stormed into his section, still muttering angrily.
Mom asked,
“Who were you shouting at?”
He replied,
“That foolish son of yours. They married Abdulrahim to that girl everyone nearly lost their lives over, and now he’s ranting that the marriage should be redirected to him. Pure madness! The marriage was conducted secretly—right after Fajr prayer, Bappa Salihu handed over kola nuts and mint and said it should be done immediately.”
Mom covered her mouth in shock.
“Feeryal? They married Abdulrahim to Feeryal?”
She clapped her hands in disbelief.
“This is a serious problem! So Yaya Abubakar agreed to marry his son to a girl of unknown origin—a girl found in the water? A girl with no status? Even Zaraddin, whom people consider unstable, I would never agree to marry to her! And Hajiya Halima was in the house watching all this happen?”
She waved dismissively.
“Let them go and bring her. I’m focused on my own affairs.”
Mom sat, shaking her head, lost in thought.
Rejection, Defiance, and Family Conflict
Outside the mosque, Ajmal struggled to steady himself, fighting the turmoil in his heart.
He approached Abdulrahim, who was bent forward, speaking quietly with Bappa Salihu seated on the mosque steps.
Ajmal forced a smile.
“Congratulations, bro.”
Faisal and Shamsuddin joined in.
“Congratulations, Ya Abdulrahim.”
Abdulrahim said nothing; his face only hardened further.
Bappa Salihu spoke,
“Go inside, Abdulrahim. May Allah bless you and make your children more obedient to you than you are to your parents.”
He rose, folded his arms across his chest, and walked inside.
After the wedding, Bappa Salihu went to Hajiya’s section, carrying kola nuts and mint. He informed her that Abdulrahim and Feeryal had been married at dawn, immediately after the Fajr prayer.
Hajiya, seated on a chair, slid down and sat flat on the floor, eyes bulging as she struck her chest.
“You married him to that girl who is half-human, half-jinn? Do you even know who that girl is? I do not accept this! As you tied this marriage, so you will untie it. By Allah, that foreign-minded man will never live with her!”
Bappa Salihu stood.
“Whether you accept it or not is irrelevant. I, along with Jibir and Ali, have accepted it. We have decided for our son Abubakar and our grandson Abdulrahim. You do not have more authority over them than we do.”
He turned and left.
Foaming with rage, Hajiya muttered,
“Nonsense. This marriage will never last. As you tied it, so you will untie it.”
From there, Bappa Salihu went to Mommy’s section.
She welcomed her father warmly, served him breakfast, and sat with him since they hadn’t greeted properly the night before.
He didn’t touch the food.
Mommy noticed and said,
“Baba, the food is ready.”
He replied,
“Leave it. Abubakar has already sent food to my room. I’ll eat there.”
Mommy forced a smile, though anger burned inside her. She knew the food would come from Auntie’s section.
She swallowed her resentment and asked gently,
“Baba, did something delay your journey? You arrived very late last night.”
He replied,
“The trip wasn’t planned. I missed the daytime flight, so I took a night one to come and do what needed to be done promptly.”
She smiled.
“You’re welcome. Everyone in the house is well.”
“They are,” he said, reaching into his pocket.
“Here are the kola nuts for your son’s wedding that was conducted at dawn.”
Mommy sprang up in shock, clutching her chest.
“Marriage? Baba, is that why you came here? This cannot stand—it must be undone!”
Bappa Salihu snapped,
“Halima, sit down! You’re behaving as if you were told your son had died. Can you reject what Allah has decreed? Pure nonsense.”
She sat slowly.
“Baba, honestly, I don’t accept this marriage. I don’t like that girl at all.”
“So you alone should choose his wife? His father gave him his choice and you turned it into chaos. That’s why I ordered the marriage immediately—to stop this foolishness. Abdulrahim has faced many trials in life and never acted this way. Control yourself. You cannot stop what Allah has ordained.”
Mommy, overwhelmed, replied,
“This is all a scheme—Hajiya Fatima’s plan. She wants to control him and his father. If he must marry again, find another woman—but not her.”
Bappa Salihu stood up, his voice firm.
“Enough nonsense. Don’t you dare stir trouble. That’s exactly why I finalized the marriage. You cannot prevent Allah’s decree.”
Plots, Desperation, and a Father’s Decision
Kuraiba stormed into the living room in agitation.
“Mommy, is it true Abdulrahim got married again? Our marriage isn’t even a year old—and to that strange girl who looks like a jinn? Tell me it’s a lie!”
Bappa Salihu shouted at her,
“What kind of madness is this—entering without greeting? What if he married again? Look at his father’s wives—three of them. He’s entitled to more than one wife. Nonsense!”
He stormed out.
After he left, Mommy grabbed Kuraiba.
“Come here. This marriage won’t stand. Abdulrahim will never live with that girl. Calm yourself. As it was done publicly, so it will be undone publicly. Leave everything to me.”
Kuraiba nodded uncertainly and left.
She went to Abdulrahim’s side and found him preparing to go to the hospital.
Blocking his path, chewing gum, she eyed him up and down.
“Our marriage isn’t even a year old and you’ve taken another wife? Didn’t you tell them you’re not medically fit? You’re a doctor yourself! You could count how many times you’ve even touched me—I always had to come to you. You can’t go three hours without a woman, and now you’re given another wife? That girl—where can she endure you?”
“Move out of my way!” he barked.
She trembled but still hugged him from behind, crying.
“Please, my husband—tell them you don’t want this marriage!”
He shook her off and walked out, got into his car, and left.
When Umma Karima heard the news, she rushed to Mommy’s section, furious.
“I’m shocked, Hajiya Halima. You sat by and allowed your son to be married to that cursed girl? Hajiya Fatima has won—she has your husband and your son. You’ve become nothing but a spectator!”
Mommy replied firmly,
“Sit down, Hajiya Karima. I’ve been restrained, but once Baba leaves town, I won’t allow this marriage to stand. I’ll show Hajiya Fatima that I gave birth to Abdulrahim.”
Consumed by rage, Umma Karima later went straight to her sorcerer, begging him to destroy the marriage at all costs.
As night fell, Bappa Salihu prepared to leave town.
Daddy escorted him to the airport, offering blessings and advice to Abdulrahim to be patient with the choice made by his parents.
Later, Mommy summoned Abdulrahim and demanded he divorce Feeryal immediately.
He refused calmly.
“Mommy, when you chose Kuraiba for me, I obeyed. Why should I disobey Daddy now? I cannot divorce her unless Daddy or Bappa Salihu orders me to.”
She froze in rage as he walked out.
Elsewhere, Miemie joyfully announced the news to Feeryal.
“Feeryal—bride of Ya Abdulrahim!”
Feeryal protested sharply, denying any connection.
Soon after, Auntie called her.
“Feeryal, Daddy is asking for you.”
In Auntie’s bedroom, Daddy smiled gently at Feeryal and began to speak to her as a father would—preparing her for a life-changing conversation.
