ABOUT THIS BOOK

Description

At the Theater

Three girls sat near the theater gate. Two wore skirts with veils, while the third, Azzahra, wore a coffee-colored hijab. She pulled out her handbag and brought some papers.

Munaya teased her, “Wallahi, Azzahrah, you amaze me jotting all these nonsense subjects—except mathematics, nothing makes sense.”

Azzahra smiled, “You wouldn’t understand. Maybe Allah made you hate mathematics, but for me, it excites me.”

Another friend added, “Even I like it, especially how Sir Haseeb teaches. His handsomeness is unmatched.”

Irritated, Azzahra snapped, “Enough of this talk. Let me review my notes; you know I get no time at home.”

Still, the girls teased her, saying if given a choice, they would pick Haseeb for her. Annoyed, Azzahra stood to leave, and they followed, apologizing.

Azzahra’s Beauty

At 19 or 20 years old, Azzahra’s beauty was striking—her fair skin, finely shaped brows, delicate nose, and captivating eyes. Her lips glowed naturally red, her teeth sparkled, and a rare dimple appeared when she smiled.

Leaving School

By the gate, they stopped a tricycle. Munaya entered while Inaya followed, but Azzahra held her back playfully, “So you really didn’t bring your car?” Inaya rolled her eyes, “Why would I lie?”

They left the school, and Azzahra whispered in her heart, “Ya Allah, let Inna not be home when I return, or my troubles will multiply.” Lost in thought, she was startled when Munaya touched her. “Don’t worry too much. Everything has an end,” Inaya reassured her.

At Tudun Yola, Azzahra alighted, bidding her friends goodbye.

Meeting Al’ameen

Walking home, she spotted Al’ameen from afar. She waved; he smiled and came closer, holding his bucket.

“Al’ameen, do you know how long I’ve searched for you? Why now?” she complained.

He sighed, “Not intentional, Azzahra. Work kept me busy. You know it’s water season.” Suddenly rain began.

“Hurry home,” he urged. “I’ll come later to hear about school.” She protested, “In this rain, you’ll continue?” But he insisted, and she ran off.

At Home with Inna

She met her stepmother, Inna, waiting angrily. “Fati! You wretched girl, always wandering! You’ll sell that food today—don’t waste my efforts!”

Azzahra, holding back tears, asked, “But Inna, why always insult me? What have I done?”

“You are your mother’s daughter, shameless!” Inna spat, thrusting laundry at her. “Wash before sunset.”

Resigned, Azzahra obeyed. After Maghrib prayers, hungry, she asked for food. Inna coldly replied, “I ate it with Khadija.” Azzahra’s heart sank.

Forced into Hawking

“Take this food to sell,” Inna ordered again the next day. “If you return unsold, you’ll pay me.” With tears, Azzahra carried her load.

At the roadside, she searched for Al’ameen but saw him nowhere. Nearby, Habiba, a jealous hawker, hissed, “She’ll steal my customers with her beauty. One day I’ll ruin that face.”

Ignoring her, Azzahra started her sales. Suddenly, a convoy of cars arrived: a black Corolla, a Range Rover, and another Corolla.

The Rich Stranger

A young man in a suit approached with money. “My boss said you should sell quickly and leave.”

Annoyed, Azzahra snapped, “Who does your boss think he is? Every day, sending money and rushing me? Today, I won’t move until I see him.”

Immediately, the security guard dragged her into the Range Rover. People watched in fear, unable to intervene.

Inside, she wept until a handsome stranger gently handed her tissue. His voice calm, “Don’t cry, Azzahra. I want to employ you at Saddam & Brothers Company. You’ll start tomorrow. And don’t worry about school—I’ll handle it.”

Panicked, she begged, “Please take me home. If Inna doesn’t see me, she’ll kill me.” Amused, he drove her back. “Tell her I’ll come later.”

Terrified, she ran inside. Soon, Inna appeared, scolding—until she saw the cars. The stranger explained politely and handed her large sums of money. Greedy, Inna blessed him profusely.

Inna’s Greed

Inside, she ordered Azzahra, “Fati, go back outside. That benefactor is waiting. Obey him well.”

Reluctantly, Azzahra went. At the gate, the stranger told her, “Tomorrow, 9 a.m., be ready. A car will pick you. Don’t refuse.”

She whispered, trembling, “I won’t go.” But when he pressed, she lied, “I’ll come.” He smiled and left.

Flashback – Their First Meeting

Months earlier, while selling food, Azzahra almost got hit by his convoy. The security scolded her, but the man apologized, insisting it was his fault.

From then on, whenever he passed, he bought food, paid generously, and told her to share with the poor. For four months, this continued until today, when she finally resisted.

Inna’s Delight

Inna grilled her, “Where do you know this rich man from?”

“I just met him, Inna,” Azzahra replied honestly.

Inna grinned, “May Allah bless him! With this, I’ll rebuild my shop!” She grabbed the money Azzahra was given, smiling greedily.

That night, Azzahra prayed before bed, reflecting: Who is this man? What does he want from me? Is his company real, or just deception?

A Troubling Dream

In her sleep, she dreamt of Al’ameen smiling and waving. “Azzahra, don’t forget me. You know I love you.”

Startled, she woke with a pounding heart, rushed to perform ablution, and returned to her prayers—asking Allah to guide her.
