ABOUT THIS BOOK

Description

Kaduna, the Governor’s City
She was walking slowly, as if she were exhausted. She wore a brown jalbab hijab that covered her from head to toe, with a modest handbag hanging from her shoulder. Just by observing the way she walked, anyone could tell she was a calm and thoughtful person. Even though she walked quickly, her composure was still visible; she carried herself with quiet dignity and balance.
She entered a small house that clearly belonged to people living a very modest life. The house was extremely small, consisting of only two rooms, a bathroom, and a tiny kitchen.
She entered quietly, greeting with “Assalamu alaikum.”
A middle-aged woman came out of the kitchen. She looked like she was cooking, as her eyes were filled with smoke from the fire. Upon hearing the greeting, she stepped out to see who had arrived.
Looking at the girl, she said,
“Fadeelah, so you’re just coming back now again today?”
Fadeelah replied softly, almost as if speaking was difficult for her.
“Sorry Mama. I hope Baba hasn’t come home yet?”
The woman gave her a displeased look and returned to the kitchen to continue cooking.
Fadeelah found a place to sit and removed her hijab. While she sat there, a young girl who was clearly her younger sister approached her and said,
“Aunty, you’re back?”
Fadeelah nodded her head slightly.
The girl continued,
“Aunty, when Baba came home earlier, he was very angry that you hadn’t returned yet. He said that from today you have stopped going to work.”
Fadeelah suddenly lifted her large eyes in shock at what her sister had said. She could not even speak at first. After a moment she asked softly,
“Husna… did something make Baba angry? When I left for work earlier, I greeted him.”
Husna, who was the talkative type of child that loved gossip, replied,
“Wallahi Aunty, I heard him saying that from to—”
Their mother quickly covered Husna’s mouth, stopping her from finishing the sentence.
Fadeelah looked worriedly at her mother.
“Mama, is what Husna said true?”
Her mother replied briefly,
“I don’t know. When your father returns, you will hear it directly from him.”
Fadeelah’s Fear and Worry
In the entire world, nothing frightened Fadeelah more than hearing about being stopped from the job she did at Rahama TV.
Hearing those words immediately took away her appetite. She quietly went into their room and lay down, thinking about what she would say to her father if he confronted her about it. She had only been working there for one year, yet this argument between her and her father had become almost constant.
Nearly every day the same issue came up. At times she even began thinking that maybe she should just leave the job so she could finally have peace.
While she was lying down thinking, she heard her father enter the house. Not long after he arrived, the Maghrib prayer call was made. As soon as the adhan began, he stood up and went out to the mosque. That gave Fadeelah the chance to quietly step into the courtyard to perform ablution before quickly returning to her room, trying to avoid meeting him.
After she finished the Maghrib prayer, she sent her younger sister Husna to serve her some tuwo to eat. She sat waiting, expecting her father to call for her, but there was complete silence. Eventually sleep overtook her.
Her Father’s Final Decision
The next morning, as usual, Fadeelah prepared to leave for work at 7:00 AM. After finishing her morning prayer and reciting her regular morning supplications, she took her bath and dressed for work. She picked up her bag and quietly walked toward the door, hoping to leave the house without her father noticing.
Just as she was about to open the door, she heard her father’s voice behind her.
“Fadeelah, come here.”
Her heart dropped with fear as she slowly walked toward him.
She lowered her head respectfully and said with a trembling voice,
“Good morning Baba.”
Instead of responding to her greeting, he asked sharply,
“Where are you going dressed like that?”
Fadeelah answered nervously,
“To work.”
Her father stared at her.
“Are you alright going like that?”
She remained silent.
Raising his voice in anger, he said,
“I asked if you are alright going like that! Does that mean you heard the message I sent yesterday?”
Fadeelah kept her head lowered, unable to respond.
Her father continued angrily,
“Fadeelah, from today I forbid you from that job. It brings you no benefit except the insults it causes me among people.”
Then he added firmly,
“I will give you two choices. You may choose whichever one you prefer. Either you bring me the man you want to marry, or I will choose one for you. By the will of Allah, you will not stay in my house for another three months. I have seen that your behavior will never end.”
After saying this, her father left her standing there with her head lowered and walked into his room.
