Waiting Impatiently
He sat inside his car parked in front of his house, busy pressing his phone when a call came in on the other one beside him. He checked the screen, hissed softly, and picked it up. Speaking in a calm but slightly annoyed tone, he said,
“Malam, if you’re coming, come quickly so we can go. Otherwise, I’m going back home. You told me you were on your way, but I’ve been waiting outside for over 25 minutes now. Even laundry doesn’t take this long to dry.”
Without waiting for a reply, he ended the call and hissed again. Less than ten minutes later, ABK arrived.
“I’m so sorry, my friend. I was about to leave when Hajiya asked me to help her calculate some expenses. That’s why I took so long,” ABK explained.
Yasir glared at him. “You think you’re clever? You couldn’t even call to tell me? I’ve been out here like a fool. Where’s your car anyway? Why are you on foot?”
ABK sighed. “It’s too dirty, and Daddy isn’t home so I couldn’t take his. You know how Mommy is with hers, so I left it for her to wash.”
“Oh, so now I’m supposed to be your driver?” Yasir scoffed, tossing him the car keys as he stepped down. “Here — you drive us. If not, I’ll just go home. Maybe I’ll even go meet that young girl you’ve been acting nervous about like a schoolboy.”
ABK burst into a playful laugh. “So you’d rather chase an older woman who’ll make people wonder if she’s your wife or your aunt? No, my friend. I prefer young girls — they’re fresh, easy to guide. I’ll raise her right myself.”
He stopped mid-sentence as a girl passed by, greeting politely, “Good afternoon.” Her voice was clear and soft, her blue-black hijab flowing gracefully past her knees, the Qur’an held to her chest glowing against her fair skin. ABK’s mouth fell open as he replied weakly, “I’m fine.”
She said nothing more and walked into the house. ABK turned to Yasir. “My friend, don’t tell me that’s the same girl from your compound?”
Yasir smirked. “Your eyes must be seeing too much beauty.”
ABK scratched his head with a smile. “Honestly, my friend, if I hadn’t already promised myself to Hasina, I’d have come back for her. She’s beautiful! No wonder you ignore every girl — turns out you’ve been hiding a gem.”
Yasir rolled his eyes sharply. “You’re crazy. What would I do with that small girl who probably doesn’t even bathe properly, let alone know what marriage means?”
ABK laughed. “You don’t understand, Yasir. She’s at least 17 — no older than Hasina. I’m warning you, my friend, don’t let pride blind you. If you wait too long, someone else might take her.”
Yasir clicked his tongue angrily and playfully hit ABK on the shoulder. “If that’s what you want to talk about, forget it. I’ve got better things to do. Let’s just go.”
As they drove off, ABK said seriously, “There’s something I must tell you about that girl. Don’t joke with it. She’s Daddy’s younger sister’s daughter — and Daddy loves her like his own child. If he ever finds out you like her, he’ll force you to marry her. So be careful what you say around Maryam; she could easily tell her mother, and once that reaches Daddy, it’ll be over for you.”
Clash of Pride and Denial
Yasir frowned deeply. “Why are you always twisting things, ABK? What would I ever do with a girl like Maryam? That small girl doesn’t even respect anyone. You saw how she greeted me today — just a quick hello and gone, like I’m invisible. Every time she sees me, she acts like I’m beneath her. If I ever said I loved her, you’d have the right to call me insane. She disrespects me, and I can’t stand that from anyone. That’s why I don’t bother with girls like her — they’re full of pride.”
He sighed and continued, “That day Yusuf came over, Mommy sent her to bring us snacks because the house help wasn’t around. The way Yusuf was looking at her — it made me furious for no reason. I couldn’t tell if I was angry at her or at him. If I hadn’t held myself back, I’d have embarrassed both of them. So please, don’t bring her up again, or I’ll stop following you anywhere.”
ABK only nodded silently, smiling faintly. He knew time would prove everything he’d said. “Still,” he replied softly, “think deeply about it. You’ll understand later.”
Moments later, they parked. ABK picked up his phone and called Hasina. “Baby, we’ve arrived. We’re at the gate.” After a short pause, he said, “Okay, come out safely.”
Within five minutes, Hasina appeared. Yasir muttered under his breath, “I knew it — she’s just another flashy one. Honestly, she doesn’t even look older than Little.” ABK only smiled, his eyes glowing with affection.
“Welcome, my friend,” Hasina greeted cheerfully. Yasir forced a smile. “Thank you. How are you and your family?”
“All fine,” she replied sweetly. “Finally, I get to see you. My love kept saying he’d bring you, but he never did until today. You’re special — today, I have a very important guest.”
Yasir’s jaw tightened. “No shame at all,” he thought bitterly. “Right in front of me, she’s calling him my love?”
“Let’s go inside,” ABK said. Yasir sighed, lowering his voice. “I’m not staying long.”
“Please, my friend,” ABK pleaded. “Don’t do this to me. If we don’t go in, she’ll be upset.”
Yasir hissed. “Fine. But tomorrow, you’re on your own with this little girl.”
They followed Hasina inside, where she had prepared snacks and drinks for them. Yasir tried not to eat, but after tasting a little, he finished most of it. “Are you sure she made this herself?” he asked suspiciously.
ABK glared. “You’re impossible. She did everything.”
Before he could respond, Hasina returned. Yasir thanked her coldly, pulled ₦200 from his pocket, handed it to ABK, and said, “When you’re done, meet me outside.” Without waiting for a reply, he walked out.
Tension and Realization
Barely seven minutes later, Yasir started calling ABK, but he didn’t answer. Frustrated, he called again and muttered, “If you don’t come out soon, I’m leaving.” He called once more — after two rings, ABK finally picked up.
“Come out now, or I’m gone,” Yasir snapped. “You left me outside like a fool while you sit in there enjoying yourself. I swear, if you’re not out in a minute, I’ll leave.”
He hung up before ABK could respond, glaring at his phone as if it were the problem.
Two minutes later, ABK appeared, smiling mischievously. Yasir shot him a deadly look. “You’re unbelievable! You left me standing there while everyone passing kept staring at me. If you were saying goodbye, you could’ve done it faster!”
ABK laughed. “My friend, you’ll never understand love until it hits you. Guys like you — always pretending not to care — are the ones who fall hardest.”
“Enough,” Yasir barked. “I’m tired of your talk about love. Don’t you ever get bored? That little girl will drive you insane one day. Imagine her saying my love right in front of me. No shame at all.”
