Manal opened her eyes and stared at Mama, her heart pounding heavily as her terror became painfully obvious. Her chest heaved in sheer distress over Mama’s words—something she had never, even in her worst nightmares, been prepared to hear. Hearing the unimaginable come straight from Mama's lips left her completely shaken, rendered speechless with wide, terrified eyes fixed on her mother.
With great difficulty, she managed to part her lips and say, “Mama, I don't understand what you just said. My mind is completely tangled; please explain it in a way I can understand.”
Mama looked at her and said, “You won't understand, Manal. Besides, I didn't want you to understand anyway—it's better for you to stay in the dark. Even if I wanted you to grasp it, you wouldn't. Just remain in your ignorance. One thing I know for certain is that your marriage to Adnan is completely over; there is no future for you and him, ever again.”
Terrified, Manal looked at Mubeena, who was also standing there in total shock, and then turned back to Mama. “Mama, you've thrown me into confusion! Please, for God's sake, clear this confusion for me. My heart is beating so fast it feels like it's going to jump out of my chest. Please help me and tell me, Mama!”
Mama closed her eyes, opened them, and replied, “You will never get out of it, Manal. You won't escape this confusion, so you'd better try to pull yourself together before you lose your mind completely.”
Mubeena chimed in, “So Mama, are you saying Adnan's father is actually our father too, or what do you mean? We don't understand—please make us understand, for God's sake!”
“If that is what your heart believes, then take it as that. If your heart believes otherwise, then take it as otherwise. The only thing I know for sure is that Manal and Adnan's marriage is like writing on water.”
“Mama, please make us understand!” Mubeena pleaded, her own distress rising.
Mama snapped at her, yelling, “You won't understand! I told you that you won't get it, so why are you being so persistent?! Drop this topic right here—I don't ever want it brought up again, now or in the future. Whoever he is to you, I said let the matter rest!” She turned to Manal and added, “Inscribe this in your heart: as long as I am alive, there is no you and Adnan.” Having said that, she walked out of the courtyard, leaving them both standing there, each consumed by her own web of confusion.
Mubeena was left consumed by the thought that Adnan's father was indeed their own father. Based on how Mama spoke, had Manal been living as the wife of her own brother?
