ABOUT THIS BOOK

Description

Lailah’s Return to Nigeria

Lailah Ali Modibbo, now ten years old, returns to her homeland—Nigeria—after a full decade in Starling City, USA, living with her mother. Her father, Justice Aliyu Modibbo, and her grandfather, Alhaji Muhd Modibbo, showered her with love and affection—she’s their only daughter and granddaughter. Her two paternal uncles, Alh Nasir (with children Jabeer, Siyama, Ayshat) and Alh Abdulkarim (with Zubair, Hayat), and their wives also cherish her deeply.

Despite this, my dear Lailah volunteers: “WANNEN KENAN.”—that’s it, that’s her world.

🏠 Homecoming Hesitation

A convoy of cars arrives at the grand gate of their compound. Lailah presses her face against the window, texting her mum from the airport. Horns honk in vain. A sigh escapes her lips—“useless and lazy people,” she mutters, annoyed at the tardiness. Her father, seated beside her, picks up his phone and calls “Nuḥu” the gatekeeper. Finally, the gate opens.

Stepping out, Lailah glimpses the handsome Yaseer, their family gate keeper. She pauses—his presence is striking, warm sunlight revealing his polished features. She sighs, flustered, and smooths her gown, descending to greet him.

🎉 Warm Reception

Later, at breakfast, the entire family buzzes with joy. Even Siyama and Ayshat, who had been looking forward to a new friend, welcome her. Upstairs, her father’s room awaits—after all, he holds the authority in the family.

After prayer and freshening up, Siyama comes into her room bearing a tray of food. Lailah shakes her head gently: “I’m not hungry… just warm it and save it.” Then she slips away—she’s not quite in the mood for chatter yet.

Turning down the corridor, she’s startled to bump into Yaya Zubair coming out of a room. He greets her warmly:
“Sorry, little sis—urgent work. But welcome back.”
She responds softly, amused, and passes on.

❤️ Family Circle

Downstairs in the living room, Lailah meets her revered grandfather, who draws her close with pride and affection.
“Rumaina, come greet your uncles too,” her father urges. She smiles shyly and greets them, stunned to discover Jabeer also present—her respectful older cousin.

She sidles away politely: “Daddy, I’ll go meet them soon.”
He replies, teasing: “Once forgiven, go show them your bride… I mean, your sisters!”
Lailah laughs inwardly—marriage isn't on her mind at the moment.

Motherly pride swells in the room as fans rejoice at her return; Zubair’s mother is especially thrilled, hopeful that their children will connect someday. A spark of delight rises as she watches Zubair’s gentle attention to Lailah.

🕘 Morning Routine

At 10 am, Lailah still sleeps upstairs. She awakens, takes a shower, wraps herself in a blue gown and black veil, and heads downstairs—phone in hand—excitedly catching up with her mother abroad:
“Good morning, Dad. I miss Mum and Afra so much…”
Her father listens with a smile. Her aunt, Basma, chimes in warmly:
“Feel free—this is your home too.”
Lailah beams.

🤝 Greetings & Awkward Silence

Siyama joins her. As they enter the living room, Zubair tries to leave. Lailah greets him quietly—“Sannu ko”—but he keeps his distance, avoiding eye contact. Under her flinch, she feels tension—like he's the guardian of the house. Hurt welled inside her, but she maintains composure and walks away gracefully.

📞 A Tender Check-in

Meanwhile, Yaseer calls his mother with firm resolve:
“Mum, don’t worry—you’ll come see me when I’ve solved this case. I miss you too… I’ll be back after Miami.”
He promises to take care of himself and hangs up, masking his tenderness behind professionalism.

💬 A Quiet Exchange with Zubair

Later, Lailah sits quietly in the front room. Zubair enters and casually greets her: “Hey, my sister…”
Lailah barely lifts her gaze. He gently pulls at his lips then smiles softly, asking about life in America. She brushes him off: she’s here to be present, to live in her homeland once more. He rises and departs, glancing back:
“No problem… I just wanted to talk.”

A fleeting moment of warmth—ambiguous yet meaningful—crosses his eyes. A quiet promise in his voice:
“Whatever it is, I love you, Lailah.”

🛍️ Preparing to Head Out

Later, she dresses in a maroon ensemble—ready for more than the confines of the house—Siyama invites,
“Sister, where are you going?”
Lailah replies sharply: “Shopping.”
Her cousin warns:
“Make sure you're not late—don’t let them worry.”
She nods, and as she walks downstairs, Zubair reappears, unsettled—“Who’s
taking you?” She hushes him with a gesture and carries on… stepping into her next chapter.
