The Shock of the Unexpected Victory
Princess Sultana felt a sharp pain deep inside her chest — it was as though her heart had been crushed, and she wished she could die from heartbreak.
Galadima sat frozen in disbelief where he was, unable to move. Everything he saw felt like a dream — the shocking sight of Prince Sultan successfully completing the horse ride and landing safely. Not a single thing went wrong.
“Then does that mean all our efforts were wasted?” he thought to himself, overwhelmed by confusion and defeat.
Despite the cold weather, the royal messenger was drenched in sweat from fear and anxiety over what awaited her from Hajiya Mai Soro. How had Prince Sultan escaped their trap? It was impossible! Yet, she kept trying to convince herself — “No, something must have gone wrong, but I did everything exactly as I was told.” Her eyes darted around nervously as she struggled to make sense of it all.
With regal pride and confidence, Prince Sultan walked side by side with Princess Salma toward the royal platform prepared for their seating, with the courtiers following behind, chanting praises.
When they arrived, the Prince went straight to his close friend, Sulaim. The two embraced warmly, and Prince Sultan whispered softly into his ear:
“May Allah keep my dearest friend safe. You know, Sulaim, your happiness is what brings joy to my heart.”
Sulaim slightly lifted his head and replied, “Everything is fine, Sultan. I hope there’s no trouble with you either.”
Prince Sultan nodded without saying anything more and walked to his throne — a seat befitting a future king.
Princess Salma, on the other hand, was given a seat right next to the Prince’s — a spot originally expected to belong to Princess Sultana, whom everyone thought would ride alongside the Prince. Proud and radiant, Princess Salma sat gracefully, her seat only a few inches from the Prince’s right hand. But even in her glory, she remained tense and unsettled, feeling her heartbeat pound heavily in her chest.
The entire crowd, including the King himself, was astonished by the sight of the Prince and the mysterious princess riding together. No one in the royal court could tell who she really was.
When the noise and murmuring finally quieted down, the royal announcer began the ceremony of presenting gifts to Prince Sultan — gifts from nobles, chiefs, and palace dignitaries. The festivities were grand, filled with the unique customs of their kingdom.
After the courtiers had presented their treasures, the regional rulers followed, each offering their tribute. Finally, the King himself stood and declared something that shook the entire court:
He was granting half of the Eastern Kingdom to his son, Prince Sultan, giving him the power to rule it as he pleased.
Galadima Murtala jumped in shock so violently that his royal turban almost fell off his head. He quickly caught it before anyone noticed, except Baba Waziri, who smiled quietly and shook his head — he knew trouble was brewing.
Anvy, Humiliation, and the Princess’s Gift
Unable to contain herself, Hajiya Mai Soro stormed out angrily, her attendants hurrying after her. “How can I stand here and watch my son be denied while the King gives half the kingdom away?” she fumed. “By Allah, this will not stand. If they think they’ve seen madness, I’ll show them true madness!”
Meanwhile, Princess Sultana, overwhelmed by pain and humiliation, could not raise her head. Embarrassment burned through her chest as she approached to present her gift to the Prince.
Her gift was remarkable — five beautifully crafted cloaks of different colors, each embroidered with silver thread, along with two powerful white horses with jet-black spots, and a royal staff made of pure gold. Everyone marveled at her offering. Yet, the Prince’s face remained calm — no expression, no reaction.
Next was Princess Shaheedah, who, out of pride, didn’t even rise from her seat; she simply gestured for her attendants to deliver her luxurious presents, which surpassed Sultana’s in splendor.
Then Princess Siyama stepped forward, modestly dressed but strikingly elegant, to offer her gifts with her companion, Zara. Courtiers announced that the Prince had graciously accepted and thanked them.
Now, all eyes turned to Princess Salma. Everyone waited eagerly to see what she would give.
As though she could read their minds, Princess Salma rose gracefully, locking eyes with the Prince — who, equally intrigued, stared back in curiosity. What could she possibly be planning?
Calmly, she walked toward the royal announcer and gestured for the speaking token. After receiving it, she bowed respectfully and began:
> “As a daughter of this blessed and just kingdom, I am deeply grateful for this honor.
I have looked into everything I possess — wealth, power, status — and found nothing worthy of presenting to my elder brother and future King, Prince Sultan.
So I will offer what is most precious to me in life.
It may appear small in form, but it is the greatest treasure of my heart.”
At those words, she turned and walked toward the Prince. The entire hall went silent. Even Prince Sultan watched her intently, captivated by her calm poise.
When she reached him, she removed two rings from her fingers — one of silver with a red gem, and the other of gold with a sparkling white diamond. She knelt before him and, with both hands, placed them in his open palm.
From where she sat, Ummul Bait, the Queen Mother, smiled proudly, her heart swelling with admiration. The princess’s courage and grace melted her heart.
Princess Salma stood, circled behind the Prince, and gently removed the silver royal cap from her head — adorned with gold and white stones — and, to everyone’s astonishment, placed it atop the Prince’s crown.
“This,” she declared, “is my gift to the future King of our land, Prince Sultan Yusuf Shareef Zaki. May Allah protect him from all evil.”
Then she gracefully returned to her seat.
The entire court erupted in awe — except for a few jealous souls who wished to see her destroyed for such boldness.
Among the crowd, Suhailat whispered to Ummeetha, “By Allah, her voice sounds exactly like your daughter’s.”
Ummeetha turned sharply and replied, “So you heard it too? They’re alike in every way, but this one belongs to royalty. My daughter is probably at home — I even tried calling her, the call connects but she’s not answering.”
Even Mommy, sitting nearby, muttered, “Honestly, I swear that’s her. I can’t believe it’s not.”
Ummeetha only smiled faintly, saying nothing.
Then came Sulaim’s turn. His gift to the Prince shocked everyone — it was grander than any presented, except for that of the King himself.
Prince Sultan personally thanked his loyal friend, Sulaim.
As the event concluded with music, drums, and royal chants, the King prepared to depart.
Prince Sultan mounted his horse once again and rode off majestically, his guards following behind in perfect formation.
Sulaim quietly slipped away before the end — the noise and excitement had given him a splitting headache.
Later, when people looked for Princess Salma, she had vanished. She had secretly left the gathering, overwhelmed by the day’s events. Walking barefoot through the long halls, she hurried toward Baba Waziri’s mansion to change her clothes before anyone could notice.
Everywhere she passed, servants bowed deeply in respect, mistaking her poise and beauty for that of a true royal princess. But she was too anxious to respond to their greetings.
Conspiracy in the Shadows
Back in the southern wing of the palace, Galadima paced restlessly, hands folded behind his back, his mind in turmoil.
“Please, Your Highness,” said Hajiya Mai Soro in a cold tone, “stop worrying over this. We must think carefully — what benefit will come from your pacing? Let us plan what to do. We made a mistake, yes, but we must find a way to fix it.”
She continued bitterly, “Because of your cousin Yusuf, you’ve been humiliated. How can the King just hand over half the kingdom to his son without consulting anyone? You also have a rightful share in this inheritance! Never in history has such a thing been done — half a kingdom given away so carelessly. No, we must act.”
Galadima finally sat down, letting out a deep sigh of anger mixed with exhaustion. Then, looking directly at her, he said:
> “I’ve heard all you’ve said, Mai Soro. There is indeed a solution.
If we find it, not only will we regain control of the Eastern Kingdom — we will rule the entire continent and wipe the lineage of Yusuf and his descendants from history forever.”
